Priest Speaks Out After Mmuo Mmili Afuluanya Incident, Raises Concerns Over Freedom of Worship

Debate Erupts Over Mmuo Mmili Afuluanya Incident as Priest Raises Concerns About Religious Freedom

A recent incident involving a traditional worship practitioner popularly known as Mmuo Mmili Afuluanya has sparked debate about religious freedom and constitutional rights in Nigeria. The controversy erupted after security operatives reportedly confronted the native doctor and asked him to demonstrate or prove the spiritual powers associated with his shrine. The situation, which circulated widely online, has since triggered strong reactions from various observers and religious voices. Among those who have spoken out is Angelo Chidi Unegbu, a Catholic priest who criticized the treatment of the traditional worship practitioner and warned that such actions could threaten the constitutional rights of all Nigerians.

In a statement addressing the incident, Angelo Chidi Unegbu argued that the issue goes beyond one individual. According to him, forcing someone to publicly demonstrate or “prove” their religious belief is not only humiliating but also undermines the principle of religious freedom guaranteed under Nigeria’s Constitution. He referenced Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution, which provides that every Nigerian citizen has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, including the freedom to practice and propagate their beliefs. The priest emphasized that citizens may not necessarily agree with another person’s belief system, but no authority should compel anyone to demonstrate their faith as a spectacle.

In his remarks, Unegbu warned that tolerating such actions could create a troubling precedent. He urged Nigerians to imagine a scenario where a Christian priest is asked by security officials to demonstrate the miracle of the Eucharist or face arrest, a situation that would likely provoke widespread outrage. According to him, the incident should concern all religious groups, including Christians, Muslims, and traditional worshippers, because it touches on the broader issue of freedom of belief and dignity.

The priest also called on religious institutions and leaders across Nigeria, particularly in Anambra State, to publicly address the matter. He warned that remaining silent when one group’s freedom is challenged could eventually lead to similar treatment of others. At the same time, Unegbu stressed that if any individual has committed a crime, they should be investigated and prosecuted through the proper legal channels. However, he maintained that religious practices alone should never become grounds for humiliation or persecution.

The incident has reignited conversations about how different religions are treated in Nigeria, especially the relationship between law enforcement agencies and practitioners of traditional African religions. While some observers argue that authorities must investigate suspicious activities where necessary, others insist that such investigations should always respect human dignity and constitutional protections.
