NDLEA Destroys 4.6 Tonnes of Suspected Cannabis in Edo Forests
According to information released by the NDLEA, officers recovered and destroyed about 4,628.9 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis from the two farms. The plantations reportedly covered approximately 1.85 hectares of land, illustrating the scale of illicit cultivation taking place in the forest communities.
The destruction formed part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to identify and eliminate cannabis cultivation sites while disrupting the supply chain for illicit drugs.
Forest areas in parts of Edo State have remained a focus of drug-enforcement operations because their remote locations can make illegal cultivation more difficult to detect. NDLEA officers have continued to conduct intelligence-led operations aimed at locating plantations, destroying cultivated cannabis and apprehending people suspected of involvement in the cultivation and distribution of the drug.
The NDLEA’s wider enforcement activities in Edo also reportedly resulted in the arrest of 10 suspects in separate operations. The arrests form part of the agency’s broader campaign against drug trafficking and illicit cultivation in the state.
Investigations are expected to determine the alleged roles of those arrested and whether they are connected to any of the cannabis plantations discovered by the agency.
The destruction of the plantations represents an attempt to prevent harvested cannabis from entering Nigeria’s illicit drug market. Beyond destroying cultivated plants, enforcement agencies typically rely on intelligence gathering, arrests and investigations to identify the individuals financing, cultivating, processing and distributing illicit drugs.
The NDLEA has repeatedly emphasized the importance of attacking the drug trade at different stages—from cultivation and production to transportation and distribution.
Edo State has featured prominently in previous NDLEA operations involving cannabis cultivation. The state’s large forest areas and suitable agricultural conditions have made the discovery and destruction of cannabis farms an ongoing concern for law-enforcement authorities.
The latest operation therefore represents another major intervention in the state’s continuing battle against illicit drug cultivation.
Following the destruction of the suspected cannabis plantations, investigators are expected to continue working to identify those responsible for cultivating the crops. Where suspects have been arrested, they may face prosecution under Nigeria’s drug-control laws if sufficient evidence is established. The NDLEA is also expected to maintain surveillance and intelligence operations in the affected areas to prevent the plantations from being re-established.

The NDLEA’s destruction of approximately 4,628.9kg of suspected cannabis from two plantations in Edo State is a significant development in the agency’s ongoing fight against illicit drug cultivation.
The operation highlights the scale of cannabis cultivation that security agencies continue to encounter in remote parts of the country and the importance of intelligence-led enforcement.
With further investigations and arrests expected, authorities will be looking to establish the people behind the cultivation and prevent similar plantations from returning to the area.
