Soludo Shuts Nkwo Nnewi Auto Spare Parts Market Over Monday Sit-At-Home Compliance

Soludo Shuts Nnewi Auto Spare Parts Market Over Continued Monday Sit-At-Home

The Anambra State Government has ordered the temporary closure of the Nkwo Nnewi Auto Spare Parts Market following the market’s alleged failure to comply with directives to end the Monday sit-at-home observance.

The decision, approved by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, was announced after reports that traders in the market continued to shut down operations on Mondays despite repeated government warnings.

According to state officials, the market has been sealed for one week, with authorities stating that the closure is intended to enforce compliance and restore normal economic activities across the state.

The Nkwo Nnewi Auto Spare Parts Market is one of the largest automotive trading hubs in West Africa, located in Nnewi, a city widely known for its strong presence in automobile parts manufacturing and trading.

Government representatives described the continued observance of the Monday sit-at-home as economically damaging and counterproductive to the state’s development goals.

Officials emphasized that the sit-at-home order is not recognized by the Anambra State Government and warned that markets and businesses that defy the directive to operate normally on Mondays may face sanctions.

The state administration has repeatedly encouraged residents and traders to resume full economic activities, arguing that prolonged closures reduce productivity, discourage investment, and weaken small and medium-scale enterprises.

Noting that Nnewi’s spare parts market plays a significant role in regional commerce, attracting buyers from across Nigeria and neighboring countries. A shutdown, even temporarily, is likely to impact daily revenue for traders, supply chains within the automotive sector and local transportation and logistics businesses

However, the government maintains that enforcing normal Monday operations is necessary to protect long-term economic stability.

The Monday sit-at-home began as a protest strategy in the South-East but has gradually affected business activities across several states in the region. While compliance varies, Anambra State authorities have taken a firm stance against continued enforcement by non-state actors.

Governor Soludo’s administration has consistently reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and reviving economic productivity across the state.

Authorities have indicated that the market will be reopened after the suspension period, provided traders comply with government directives.

The development signals a tougher enforcement approach as the state government seeks to eliminate disruptions to business operations and restore investor confidence in Anambra’s commercial hubs.
