Anambra Government Shuts Down 54 Hospitals and Clinics Over Unprofessional Practices

The Anambra State Government has shut down 54 hospitals and clinics across the state following findings of unprofessional and unsafe medical practices, as part of efforts to sanitise the healthcare sector and protect residents from substandard medical services.

The affected facilities include private hospitals, maternity homes, and clinics operating without proper approvals or failing to meet required medical and ethical standards.

According to officials involved in the exercise, the closures followed routine inspections and intelligence-led monitoring carried out by state health authorities. The inspections revealed multiple violations, including:

-Operating without valid registration or licences

-Employing unqualified or uncertified medical personnel

-Poor hygiene and unsafe treatment environments

-Use of unapproved medical equipment and drugs

-Failure to comply with established healthcare regulations

Authorities said some of the facilities posed serious risks to patients, especially pregnant women and children, making government intervention unavoidable.

The state government made it clear that the action was not meant to witch-hunt operators, but to enforce minimum standards and ensure that only qualified professionals provide medical services in Anambra.

Officials stressed that healthcare is a life-and-death sector, and unregulated practices can lead to avoidable complications, infections, and deaths.

They also warned that operators who ignore regulations would face sanctions, prosecution, or permanent closure, depending on the severity of the violations.

The government noted that some of the sealed facilities may be allowed to reopen only after meeting all regulatory requirements, including proper registration, staffing, and facility upgrades.

Facility owners were advised to approach the relevant regulatory bodies to regularise their operations rather than operate illegally.

Residents were urged to verify the status of hospitals and clinics before seeking medical care, especially in emergencies. The government reaffirmed its commitment to improving healthcare delivery through stricter monitoring, better enforcement, and continuous reforms.

Health authorities also encouraged the public to report suspected illegal or poorly run medical facilities, assuring that all reports would be treated seriously.

The shutdown forms part of a broader effort by the Anambra State Government to raise healthcare standards, reduce medical negligence, and restore public confidence in private health services.

Officials said inspections would continue statewide to ensure compliance and prevent the re-emergence of unsafe medical practices.

The closure of 54 hospitals and clinics sends a strong message that patient safety cannot be compromised. While the action may temporarily disrupt some services, the government insists it is necessary to build a safer, more reliable healthcare system for the people of Anambra State.

More updates are expected as the review process continues.
