Anambra Court Jails Nnaemeka Nwawka, Sage Nebefeife Foundation 14 Years Over Fraud Case

Anambra Court Jails Orient Petroleum MD, Foundation for 14 Years Over Fraud

Justice O. M. Anyachebelu of the Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka has convicted and sentenced Nnaemeka Nwawka, Managing Director of Orient Petroleum Resources Plc, along with the Sage Nebefeife Foundation, to 14 years imprisonment each for fraud-related offences.

The conviction follows a lengthy legal battle that lasted nearly a decade, during which the defendants faced a 10-count charge bordering on stealing, fraudulent conversion, and gratification.

According to court proceedings, the case centered on the alleged diversion of company funds into private use through a network of transactions linked to corporate contracts.

One of the charges revealed that between April and December 2012, over ₦82.8 million was transferred from a company account into the Sage Nebefeife Foundation’s account.

Another charge showed that between January and May 2013, an additional ₦29.6 million was allegedly moved in similar fashion.

Prosecutors argued that these transfers were not legitimate business transactions but part of a scheme to funnel funds into personal control.

The case was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which called four witnesses and presented multiple documents as evidence during trial.

According to the prosecution:

Contracts were allegedly awarded to companies linked to associates

Payments were made to these firms

Funds were later redirected through the Sage Nebefeife Foundation

The monies were then withdrawn for personal use

The prosecution maintained that the pattern demonstrated deliberate diversion of corporate funds.

Despite pleading not guilty, Justice Anyachebelu ruled that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The court consequently; sentenced Nwawka and the Foundation to 14 years imprisonment each and ordered the refund of ₦140.9 million to Orient Petroleum Resources Plc

The investigation reportedly began after a petition was filed by investor Cletus Ibeto, who claimed to have invested ₦25 billion into Orient Petroleum Resources Plc.

The petition alleged that funds were siphoned through questionable contract awards to companies linked to associates, with proceeds allegedly routed back through the Foundation.

With the conviction now secured, the case stands as one of the notable fraud-related rulings delivered by an Anambra court in recent years.
