Brazil-Based Nigerian Arrested at Lagos Airport for Smuggling 1.6kg of Cocaine
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a Brazil-based Nigerian businessman at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for concealing 1.6 kilograms of cocaine in his body and shoes.
The suspect, Uche Franklin Onyekwere, 47, was apprehended on January 29, 2026, shortly after arriving at the Lagos airport from São Paulo, Brazil, via Johannesburg, South Africa. NDLEA operatives, acting on intelligence reports, conducted a thorough screening that indicated concealed contraband on the suspect’s person.
During a detailed search, NDLEA operatives discovered cocaine wrapped around his right thigh and additional cocaine concealed in the soles of his shoes The total weight of the recovered drugs amounted to approximately 1.60 kilograms, confirming a sophisticated attempt to smuggle narcotics through the country’s busiest international airport.
Onyekwere has reportedly been residing in Brazil since 2008, where he operated a toy business in São Paulo. Preliminary investigations revealed that he purchased the cocaine in Brazil with the intention of reselling it in Nigeria, allegedly to raise funds for his business and the naming ceremony of his newborn child.
The NDLEA confirmed that Onyekwere’s arrest is part of ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking and prevent Nigeria from being used as a transit hub for illegal narcotics.
In a statement, NDLEA officials emphasized their commitment to strengthening intelligence-led operations at international points of entry. The agency revealed that such arrests are vital in protecting public health and national security, given the dangers associated with cocaine trafficking and consumption.
