Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have intercepted a suspected foreign courier allegedly transporting illicit drugs, alcoholic drinks, and other prohibited substances to terrorists operating in parts of Borno StateThe suspect, identified in military reports as Mrs. Rachael Samuel, a Chadian national, was arrested during an operation in the North-East as troops intensified efforts to disrupt the logistics networks believed to support terrorist groups around the Lake Chad Islands.

According to military authorities, the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation targeting suspicious movements along a route believed to be used to move supplies toward areas linked to insurgent activity.

The interception is being seen as another significant breakthrough in the military’s campaign against not only armed terrorists, but also the hidden support systems that help sustain their operations.

Military sources said the operation was carried out by troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI during a search mission along the Maiduguri–Monguno axis in Borno State.

The troops reportedly intercepted a suspicious vehicle travelling toward Kwatan Doron Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area, an area close to locations historically associated with insurgent activity around the Lake Chad region. During the operation, the woman was arrested and the vehicle searched. Security personnel allegedly discovered a large consignment of prohibited items which they believe were being transported to terrorist elements operating within the Lake Chad Islands.

The suspect was subsequently taken into military custody for further questioning and investigation.

According to the military, the items recovered from the suspect included a substantial quantity of suspected cannabis sativa, as well as alcoholic and chemical substances believed to be prohibited.

Items reportedly recovered includeSeven compressed bundles of suspected cannabis sativa, weighing about 30 kilograms, Two 10-litre containers of a substance identified as hydromercuric chloride, popularly referred to as Suck and Die”, One carton containing 48 bottles of dry gin, 61 bottles of herbal alcoholic beverages, A mobile phone, ATM cards, Cash and personal effects

Military officials said the total street value of the recovered items runs into millions of naira.

The significance of the arrest goes beyond the seizure of drugs and alcohol. According to military intelligence, terrorist groups operating in remote camps often rely on smugglers, couriers, informants, and suppliers to move food, fuel, medication, narcotics, and other supplies into difficult-to-access areas.

The military noted that illicit drugs and intoxicants are frequently used by insurgent groups to: stimulate fighters, suppress fear, increase aggression, and sustain violent operations in the field.

If the military’s allegation is confirmed, the interception means troops were able to cut off a part of the support chain that helps terrorists function behind the scenes. That is a major security gain because in counterinsurgency operations, defeating fighters on the battlefield is only one part of the struggle — disrupting the supply networks that feed them is just as important.

The operation also highlights a broader pattern in the military’s current strategy in the North-East.

In recent months, security operations have increasingly focused not only on direct gun battles with insurgents, but also on terrorist logistics networks — the hidden channels through which food, fuel, communication devices, medicine, narcotics, and financial support reach fighters in remote camps.

By targeting couriers, suppliers, and suspected collaborators, troops are attempting to weaken terrorist groups from the inside by cutting off the materials they depend on. This strategy is particularly important in Borno State, where the difficult terrain, cross-border routes, and proximity to the Lake Chad Basin have historically made it easier for insurgents to move supplies and hide within isolated communities or islands.

The reference to the Lake Chad Islands is especially significant. The Lake Chad region has long been a strategic area in the Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgency because of its complex geography, cross-border access, and remote settlements spread across parts of Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.

These conditions have made the area useful to insurgents as a hideout, transit route, and operational base. As a result, any suspected supply movement toward that zone is treated as a serious security concern.

If investigators confirm that the seized items were indeed meant for terrorist elements operating in the Lake Chad Islands, it would further reinforce concerns about the continued use of regional smuggling routes to support insurgent groups.

Military authorities said the suspect is currently in custody while the recovered items have been secured pending further investigation and eventual handover to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

At this stage, the case remains under investigation, and authorities are expected to examine: the suspect’s route and travel history, the intended destination of the seized items, whether she was acting alone or as part of a wider network, and whether there are additional local or foreign collaborators involved.

These details will be crucial in determining whether the arrest is linked to a larger terrorist supply chain operating across Borno and the wider Lake Chad corridor.

For residents of Borno and the wider North-East, the operation is another reminder that the fight against terrorism is not only about armed clashes in the bush, but also about identifying and dismantling the hidden networks that sustain extremist violence. The arrest of a suspected foreign courier with a large consignment of drugs and alcohol allegedly destined for terrorists suggests that insurgent groups may still be relying on outside logistical support despite ongoing military pressure. It also underlines the continued importance of intelligence gathering, road searches, and surveillance along routes that connect communities to vulnerable conflict zones.

The interception of a suspected foreign drug courier in Borno by troops of Operation HADIN KAI represents more than just a routine arrest. It points to the deeper and often less visible side of the insurgency — the logistics networks that help keep terrorist groups supplied and operational.

With a Chadian suspect in custody and a large quantity of suspected cannabis, alcohol, and other prohibited substances recovered, the operation could prove to be a valuable breakthrough in the effort to weaken terrorist support channels in the North-East.

As investigations continue, attention will now turn to whether the suspect was part of a broader cross-border supply network and what further intelligence the military may uncover from the seizure.
