Security operatives have successfully rescued four persons who were abducted during the recent attack on an examination centre in Olowa, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, bringing relief to families and residents who had anxiously awaited positive news. The Kogi State Government announced the development on Thursday, describing the rescue as the result of a coordinated security operation launched immediately after the abduction.

The victims were kidnapped when armed men attacked an examination centre where candidates were sitting for the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.

The incident occurred when gunmen invaded an examination centre in Olowa during the conduct of the NECO examination. The attackers abducted several people, including students and school officials, creating panic within the community and forcing security agencies to launch an immediate rescue operation. The attack drew national attention and renewed concerns over the security of schools and examination centres across Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, the government confirmed that four of the abducted victims have now regained their freedom. According to the statement, the successful operation followed directives from Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, who ordered security agencies to deploy all available resources to secure the safe return of the victims.

The government praised the professionalism and commitment of the security personnel involved in the operation, noting that the rescue was achieved through coordinated intelligence gathering and tactical operations.

While providing an update on the rescue, the Kogi State Government reiterated that preliminary investigations suggest the examination centre involved was allegedly operating as an unauthorised “miracle centre.”

Officials stated that the centre was not recognised under the state’s approved examination security framework and that investigations into its operations are continuing. Authorities emphasized, however, that the nature of the examination centre did not diminish the government’s responsibility to protect lives and rescue those abducted.

News of the rescue has brought relief to families, community members, and education stakeholders who had been praying for the victims’ safe return. Residents expressed appreciation to security agencies for their efforts while urging the government to intensify measures to prevent similar attacks on schools and public institutions.

Many also called for improved security around examination centres, especially in rural communities that remain vulnerable to criminal attacks.

The attack and subsequent rescue have once again highlighted the importance of strengthening security around educational institutions. Stakeholders have called for: Increased deployment of security personnel to schools. Better intelligence gathering before public examinations. Closer collaboration between local communities and security agencies. Stronger regulation of examination centres. Swift prosecution of those responsible for school attacks.

Education experts argue that students should never have to fear for their safety while pursuing their education.

The Kogi State Government has assured residents that efforts to improve security across the state will continue. Officials also pledged to sustain operations aimed at identifying and arresting those responsible for the attack while ensuring that anyone involved in operating illegal examination centres is investigated in accordance with the law.

The government urged citizens to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information that could assist security agencies in preventing future crimes.
