The Oyo State Police Command has recorded a significant breakthrough in the fight against infrastructure vandalism with the arrest of three suspected members of a railway vandalism syndicate and the recovery of stolen railway tracks valued at approximately ₦200 million.
The operation, carried out through intelligence-led policing, highlights the growing determination of law enforcement agencies to protect Nigeria’s critical infrastructure from criminal activities that threaten public safety and economic development. Police authorities say the suspects were intercepted before the stolen rail materials could be transported to their intended destination, preventing what could have been another major loss to the country’s railway system.
According to the Oyo State Police Command, the operation was conducted on July 14, 2026, following credible intelligence provided by members of the public. Acting on the information, operatives attached to the Command Monitoring Unit tracked the suspects to the Gambari, Orile-Igbon area of Oyo State, where they intercepted a truck allegedly transporting the stolen railway materials.
The suspects were identified as: Waheed Ayinde (54), Muhammed Sani (27), Hassan Ibrahim (22). Police said the operation was carefully coordinated to ensure the suspects were apprehended before they could move the railway tracks to another location.
During the operation, officers recovered a large quantity of vandalized railway tracks estimated to be worth about N200 million. The police also seized a HOWO truck (Registration Number: CAL 972 XA), which investigators believe was being used to transport the stolen materials.
Authorities described the recovery as one of the major successes recorded in recent efforts to combat the vandalism of public infrastructure.
According to preliminary investigations, the railway tracks were allegedly removed from railway infrastructure located in Niger State. Police said the syndicate reportedly transported the materials to Ogbomoso in Oyo State, where they were temporarily stored before plans were made to move them onward to Lagos.
Investigators are working to determine how the railway infrastructure was vandalized, who financed the operation, and whether additional suspects were involved.
The Police Command credited the success of the operation to useful information received from vigilant members of the public. Authorities noted that community cooperation remains essential in combating organised criminal activities, especially crimes involving the destruction of public infrastructure. The Command encouraged residents to continue reporting suspicious movements and activities, assuring the public that all information would be treated confidentially.
Railway vandalism has become a growing concern in Nigeria due to its impact on transportation, public safety, and national development. Removing railway tracks and other components can disrupt train services, increase maintenance costs, and expose passengers to significant safety risks. Beyond the financial losses, vandalism of critical infrastructure slows economic growth by affecting the movement of goods and people across the country. Security experts have repeatedly called for tougher enforcement, improved surveillance, and stricter penalties for those involved in the destruction or theft of public assets.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that investigations remain ongoing to identify other individuals suspected to be part of the alleged vandalism syndicate. Authorities say efforts are focused on uncovering the full network behind the operation, including those responsible for purchasing, transporting, or financing stolen railway materials. Police also reiterated their commitment to safeguarding critical national infrastructure and bringing all those involved in such crimes to justice.
Although the suspects have been arrested, it is important to note that they have not been convicted of any offence. Under Nigerian law, every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law. The allegations against the suspects will ultimately be determined through the judicial process.

The arrest of three suspected railway vandals and the recovery of rail tracks worth approximately N200 million represent a major victory for the Oyo State Police Command in its campaign against infrastructure-related crimes. The operation also demonstrates the importance of intelligence gathering and public cooperation in protecting national assets.
As investigations continue, Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether additional suspects are apprehended and how the case progresses through the courts.
