Gunmen Invade Kogi School During NECO Examination, Abduct Four Students, Principal and Exams Officer

Panic swept through Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State after suspected gunmen stormed the school during the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examination, abducting four students, the school principal, and an examination official.

The attack has heightened concerns over the safety of schools across Nigeria, particularly as students continue to sit for national examinations amid persistent security challenges in several parts of the country.

According to security reports, the attackers invaded the school while students were writing their NECO examination, creating confusion and forcing candidates and staff to flee for safety.

Witnesses described scenes of fear as gunshots sent students running in different directions while the armed men targeted specific victims before escaping from the school premises. The incident disrupted the examination and left parents, teachers, and residents deeply worried about the safety of the abducted victims.

Authorities confirmed that the attackers abducted: Four students who were participating in the ongoing NECO examination. The school principal.  A NECO ad hoc official responsible for examination duties.

The identities of some of the victims have not been publicly released as security agencies continue rescue efforts.

Following the attack, the Kogi State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation. Police authorities confirmed that security personnel were deployed to the area shortly after the incident in an effort to track the kidnappers and secure the release of the victims.

In a positive development, officials announced that one of the abducted students has already been rescued, while operations continue to locate and free the remaining victims. The Commissioner of Police, alongside senior military and state security officials, also visited the school to assess the situation and coordinate the ongoing response.

The latest attack has renewed concerns about the security of educational institutions across Nigeria. Schools are expected to provide a safe environment where students can learn and sit for examinations without fear. However, repeated attacks on schools in different parts of the country continue to threaten education and undermine public confidence. Parents and education stakeholders have called for stronger security measures around schools, especially during national examinations when large numbers of students and officials gather.

The incident has prompted fresh calls for both the federal and Kogi State governments to strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities. Many Nigerians believe that protecting schools should remain a national priority, particularly given the long-term impact that insecurity has on children’s education and emotional well-being.

Security experts have also urged greater intelligence gathering, increased patrols, and closer collaboration between local communities and security agencies to prevent future attacks.

The police have assured the public that every available resource is being deployed to rescue the remaining victims and bring the perpetrators to justice. Investigators are expected to examine how the attackers gained access to the school and whether they received assistance from informants familiar with the area. Authorities have appealed to residents to provide useful information that may assist ongoing rescue operations.

The abduction of students and school officials during a NECO examination is another painful reminder of the security challenges facing Nigeria’s education sector. While the rescue of one student offers hope, families of the remaining victims continue to await their safe return.

As investigations and rescue efforts continue, many Nigerians are looking to security agencies and government authorities to ensure that those responsible are apprehended and that stronger measures are implemented to protect schools from future attacks.
