Police Arrest Two Suspected Ritualists Over Human Skull in Oyo
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two men over the alleged unlawful possession of a human skull in Ijio, a community in Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oyo State. The arrests were confirmed by the police as part of an ongoing investigation into what authorities described as a disturbing case involving grave tampering and the illegal possession of human remains.
According to the command, the suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation carried out in collaboration with members of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun. The incident has triggered concern among residents and added to growing public anxiety over ritual-related crimes and the illegal handling of human body parts in parts of Nigeria.
According to the police, the first suspect was arrested after security operatives acted on credible intelligence regarding the possession of a human skull in the Ijio area. The suspect, identified as Shittu Isah, was reportedly taken into custody during the operation. Preliminary findings from the police suggest that he allegedly confessed to exhuming the skull from a Muslim burial ground in the community.
Following his arrest and interrogation, a second suspect identified as Tunde Ajibade was also arrested in connection with the case. Police say the two men are currently being investigated over their alleged roles in the unlawful possession and movement of the human skull.
The Oyo State Police Command disclosed that the recovered skull has been preserved and will undergo forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation. This step is considered important because it could help authorities determine the origin of the remains, confirm whether the skull was recently exhumed, and establish additional facts relevant to the case.
The use of forensic analysis also suggests that the police are treating the matter as a serious criminal investigation rather than a routine arrest. At this stage, authorities have not publicly stated whether the suspects were planning to use the skull for ritual purposes, sale, or any other activity. However, the nature of the case has already fueled widespread speculation because of the long-standing association between human remains and ritual crime allegations in Nigeria.
One notable aspect of the operation is the reported collaboration between the police and Amotekun, the regional security outfit established in the South-West to support local security efforts. The joint operation reflects the growing role of intelligence sharing and inter-agency cooperation in tackling crimes that may not always be detected through ordinary patrol work.
In recent years, both the police and Amotekun have increasingly worked together on cases involving kidnapping, cult violence, robbery, and suspicious criminal activities in rural communities.
The Oyo case is another example of how local intelligence and coordinated security action can lead to arrests in cases that might otherwise remain hidden.
Although the police have not yet released a full motive behind the possession of the skull, the case has naturally revived public fears around ritual-related crimes. In many parts of Nigeria, reports involving missing body parts, tampered graves, or the recovery of human remains often raise suspicion about ritual practices, money-making schemes, or occult-related criminal activity. Even when investigations are still at an early stage, such cases tend to provoke strong emotional reactions because of the horror associated with desecrating graves and handling human remains unlawfully.
For residents of communities where such incidents happen, the fear goes beyond the immediate case. It often raises wider concerns about security, the protection of burial sites, and whether there may be broader criminal networks involved.
The arrest of the two suspects is significant for several reasons:
1. It involves alleged grave tampering: If the allegation is confirmed, it means a burial ground was violated and human remains were removed unlawfully — a deeply disturbing offence both legally and culturally.
2. It raises questions about motive: Until investigators establish why the skull was exhumed and what it was meant for, public suspicion will remain high.
3. It highlights the role of intelligence-led policing: The operation shows how actionable intelligence and collaboration between the police and local security outfits can help uncover hidden crimes.
4. It reflects a broader social fear; Stories involving human skulls and ritual suspicions tend to strike a nerve in Nigerian society because they combine crime, superstition, and the desecration of the dead.
At the moment, the Oyo State Police Command says investigations are still ongoing, and more details are expected as the case progresses. It remains unclear whether more suspects could be linked to the matter, whether the skull is connected to a larger criminal operation, or whether additional evidence may emerge from the forensic analysis.
As with any criminal investigation, the outcome will likely depend on what police uncover through interrogation, forensic findings, and community-based intelligence. For now, the arrest of the two suspects marks the beginning of what could become a much larger and more sensitive investigation.

The arrest of two suspected ritualists in Oyo State over the alleged possession of a human skull has once again drawn attention to the disturbing reality of crimes involving human remains in Nigeria.
With one suspect reportedly accused of exhuming the skull from a burial ground and another arrested during follow-up investigation, the case has already sparked concern among residents and reignited public fear over ritual-related criminal activity.
As the Oyo State Police Command continues its investigation and awaits forensic findings, many will be watching closely to see whether the case reveals a deeper criminal motive or wider network behind the incident.
