Woman Arrested After Fire Kills Boyfriend’s Two Daughters in Benue, Cheating Motive Alleged

A tragic fire incident in Zaki-Biam, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, has left two young girls dead, with police arresting a woman identified as Mbalumen Ikyenge in connection with the case. According to reports, the suspect was arrested after a fire broke out at the home of her alleged boyfriend, Aondoyima Ierkwagh, leading to the deaths of his two daughters, aged four and six.

While the incident has generated outrage and grief, the Benue State Police Command says investigations are still ongoing and the exact motive behind the attack has not yet been officially established.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Command, DSP Udeme Edet, reportedly confirmed that the command received a complaint from the father of the deceased children, who alleged that someone set his house on fire. Following the report, police arrested Mbalumen Ikyenge in connection with the incident. At this stage, the command has confirmed the arrest and the deaths of the two children, but has not officially concluded what led to the fire or whether the suspect acted over a domestic dispute as widely alleged.

According to witness accounts, the two girls were inside a hut when the fire broke out. Neighbours were said to have rushed to the scene after noticing the blaze and managed to pull the children out before taking them to the hospital for treatment. Sadly, the girls reportedly died from the severe burns they sustained.

Their deaths have triggered deep sorrow in the community and renewed anger over the violence that can emerge from unresolved domestic and relationship conflicts.

Although the police have not officially confirmed the motive, some neighbours alleged that the incident may have stemmed from a relationship dispute. According to those accounts, the suspect had visited her boyfriend’s residence on the night of the incident but was asked to leave. Witnesses claimed she refused to go because she believed another woman was inside the compound. The same accounts alleged that sometime later, a fire was set, with the suspect reportedly believing another woman was in one of the huts. Instead, the blaze is said to have engulfed the structure where the two girls were sleeping.

These claims remain witness allegations and should be treated as such until the police conclude their investigation and provide an official account.

Beyond the immediate horror of the incident, the case has drawn attention to the vulnerability of children caught in adult disputes. If the allegations are eventually substantiated, it would represent an especially heartbreaking example of how personal conflict can spiral into irreversible tragedy, with children paying the highest price.

The deaths of the two girls have already left many people asking difficult questions about the events leading up to the fire, the living conditions in the compound, and whether the tragedy could have been prevented.

For now, the Benue State Police Command says it is investigating the full circumstances surrounding the case. That means important details — including the exact sequence of events, the suspect’s actions, the nature of her relationship with the children’s father, and the true motive behind the fire — remain subject to official scrutiny.

As the investigation progresses, police are expected to determine whether the case will lead to formal murder or arson charges and whether the witness accounts align with the evidence gathered.

The incident has already provoked strong reactions online and within the local community, where many have expressed anger, shock, and sympathy for the family of the deceased children. For many observers, the most painful part of the story is that the victims were very young children who had no role in the dispute now being linked to the tragedy. The case is also likely to reignite conversations around domestic violence, emotional instability in relationships, and the need for earlier intervention in high-risk disputes before they escalate into deadly violence.
