Nigerian Army Uncovers IEDs Hidden in Abia Forest During Security Operation
Nigerian Army Discovers Explosive Devices Hidden in Abia Forest
Troops of the Nigerian Army under the 14 Brigade have uncovered improvised explosive devices (IEDs concealed within a forest in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, raising fresh concerns over attempts by criminal elements to destabilise the area.
The discovery was made during a routine clearance and security patrol carried out by soldiers around the Umuchinma axis, a location known for its dense forest and strategic routes. Acting on credible intelligence, the troops combed the area and uncovered two locally fabricated explosive devices carefully hidden to avoid detection.
Military sources revealed that the IEDs were constructed using gas cylinders, explosives, electrical components, and sharp metallic objects, indicating an intention to cause significant damage if detonated. The positioning of the devices suggested they were meant to target security personnel or unsuspecting civilians moving through the area.
Further search operations around the site led to the discovery of items believed to be linked to criminal activity, including empty ammunition shells, bags containing nails, and traces of a temporary camp suspected to have been used by armed groups. The camp was subsequently destroyed to prevent further use.
The operation followed information obtained during ongoing investigations, pointing to the involvement of individuals with technical knowledge of explosive construction. No casualties were recorded during the exercise, as the devices were safely secured and neutralised by the troops.
The Commander of the 14 Brigade commended the soldiers for their vigilance and professionalism, stressing that the Nigerian Army remains committed to denying criminal groups any operational space within its area of responsibility. He also reassured residents that security forces are intensifying patrols and intelligence-driven operations to ensure lasting peace in Abia State and neighbouring areas.
