Kidnapped Oyo Pupils and Teachers Regain Freedom After Weeks in Captivity
The pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have finally regained their freedom, bringing relief to their families, communities, and many Nigerians who followed the case with concern. The development was confirmed on Friday by the Presidency through the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who announced that the victims were successfully rescued through the efforts of Nigerian security agencies. The rescue marks the end of weeks of uncertainty following the abduction, which sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for stronger security around schools.
According to the Presidency, the pupils and teachers were rescued during a coordinated security operation. Authorities disclosed that several members of the kidnapping gang were arrested during the operation and are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Officials also stated that the operation was carried out without yielding to the kidnappers’ demands. Reports indicate that one of the notorious gang leaders whose release had reportedly been demanded by the abductors remains in custody and is still facing prosecution.
Security agencies are expected to provide a more detailed account of how the operation was conducted.
The abduction had generated widespread anxiety across Oyo State and beyond. Parents, teachers, community leaders, labour unions, and civil society organisations repeatedly appealed to the government to intensify rescue efforts and ensure the safe return of the victims.
The incident also reignited concerns about insecurity in rural communities and the vulnerability of schools to attacks by criminal groups.
Following their rescue, videos shared by the Presidency showed some of the freed teachers and pupils expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for securing their release. The emotional scenes reflected the relief of survivors after spending weeks in captivity and offered reassurance to worried families who had waited anxiously for positive news.
While the successful rescue has been welcomed across the country, many Nigerians believe the incident underscores the urgent need to strengthen security around schools, particularly in rural communities. Security experts have continued to advocate improved intelligence gathering, stronger community policing, and better protection of educational institutions to prevent similar attacks in the future.
