FG Files Terrorism, Kidnapping Charges Against Suspects Over Oyo Students’ Abduction

FG Files Terrorism, Kidnapping Charges Against Three Men Over Abduction of Oyo Students and Teachers

The Federal Government has filed criminal charges against three men over their alleged involvement in the kidnapping of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, marking a significant development in the ongoing efforts to bring those responsible for the attack to justice. The charges, filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, accuse the defendants of offences ranging from terrorism and kidnapping to concealment of information, incitement, and illegal mining. The case is expected to commence in court next week.

It is important to note that these are allegations brought by the Federal Government. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a competent court of law.

According to the charge sheet, the three defendants are: Abdulrazak Umar, also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid, Yunusa Musa, also known as Yunusa bin Musa, Shamsu Adamu Sani, also known as Abu Itisar.  All three are reported to be from Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State.

The Federal Government alleged that they worked alongside three other individuals identified as Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed, and Ibrahim Khabab in planning and executing the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers between January and May 2026.

The defendants are facing a 10-count charge covering several serious offences, including: terrorism, kidnapping, concealment of information, incitement to commit terrorist acts, membership of a proscribed terrorist organisation, cybercrime-related offences, and illegal mining.

Prosecutors allege that the accused not only participated in the planning of the kidnapping but also concealed information about the identities and activities of other alleged members of the group despite being aware of the plot.

One of the most serious allegations in the charge sheet is that the defendants allegedly professed membership of Darul Salam, which the Federal Government describes as an affiliate of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan (Ansaru), a terrorist organisation banned in Nigeria. The prosecution argues that this alleged affiliation constitutes an offence under Nigeria’s Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act.

The allegation will, however, have to be tested in court before any legal conclusion can be reached.

The first defendant, Abdulrazak Umar, faces additional allegations. According to the Federal Government, he allegedly used a WhatsApp group titled “The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace” to provide instructions and encourage acts of terrorism.

Prosecutors also accused him of training individuals allegedly involved in terrorist activities.  These allegations form part of the charges brought under the Terrorism Act and the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

Apart from the terrorism-related counts, Abdulrazak Umar also faces an allegation of unlawful gold mining. The prosecution claims he engaged in illegal mining activities at streams located within the Chaza area of Suleja Local Government Area, Niger State, between 2024 and 2026, contrary to the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

The kidnapping of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State generated widespread concern across the country. The incident renewed calls for stronger security around schools and more decisive action against criminal groups targeting educational institutions.

The filing of charges represents one of the first major legal actions arising from the investigation into the incident.

The three defendants are expected to be arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja next week. During the proceedings, the court is expected to formally read the charges to the defendants, who will have an opportunity to enter their pleas.

Depending on the outcome of the arraignment, the court may also consider applications relating to bail or order that the defendants remain in custody pending trial.

The prosecution highlights the Federal Government’s continued efforts to combat terrorism, kidnapping, and organised criminal activities across the country. Attacks on schools have remained a major security concern in recent years, prompting renewed calls for improved intelligence gathering, stronger law enforcement, and better protection for students, teachers, and educational institutions.

Legal experts say the case will be closely watched because it involves allegations of terrorism financing, kidnapping, online incitement, and organised criminal activity.

The Federal Government’s decision to file terrorism and kidnapping charges against the three suspects marks an important step in the legal process following the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State.

While the allegations are serious, they remain allegations at this stage. The defendants are entitled to a fair trial, and it will be the responsibility of the court to examine the evidence presented by the prosecution before reaching a verdict.
