Atiku Says Tinubu Should Have Addressed Nigerians After Release of Oyo Schoolchildren
Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should have personally addressed Nigerians following the successful rescue of abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The former vice president made the remark while reacting to the release of the victims, describing the operation as a significant achievement that deserved national recognition. However, he argued that the President missed an important opportunity to reassure citizens and demonstrate leadership through a direct address.
While expressing relief over the safe return of the pupils and teachers, Atiku praised the efforts of the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies involved in the operation.
He acknowledged the professionalism and commitment displayed during the rescue mission, noting that the successful outcome brought hope to families and communities that had waited anxiously for weeks. The victims regained their freedom after spending 56 days in captivity following their abduction in May 2026.
Despite commending the rescue operation, Atiku maintained that President Tinubu should have addressed the nation after the victims were released. According to him, a presidential broadcast or public briefing would have reassured Nigerians, honoured the efforts of security personnel, and provided greater transparency regarding the operation. He argued that such communication is an important aspect of national leadership, particularly during periods of heightened concern over insecurity.
The kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area shocked many Nigerians and renewed concerns about the safety of schools across the country. Following weeks of coordinated intelligence gathering and security operations, authorities successfully rescued the victims. Government officials later disclosed that several suspected kidnappers were arrested while others were neutralised during the operation. Authorities also stated that no negotiations involving the release of detained criminal suspects were made to secure the victims’ freedom.
Atiku’s comments have generated diverse reactions among Nigerians. Some believe the President should have personally addressed the nation after such a significant security success, arguing that it would have strengthened public confidence in government efforts. Others maintain that the government’s official statements and briefings by relevant authorities were sufficient, noting that the rescue itself remained the most important outcome.
The differing opinions reflect broader discussions about leadership communication during national security incidents.
Political analysts have long argued that communication plays an important role in governance, especially during crises. Public addresses can provide reassurance, reduce misinformation, and improve citizens’ understanding of government actions.
At the same time, governments often balance the need for transparency with operational security considerations, particularly during sensitive security operations.

The successful rescue of the abducted Oyo schoolchildren and teachers was widely welcomed across Nigeria. As discussions continue, the incident has once again highlighted the importance of both effective security operations and clear communication in building public confidence during times of national concern.
