Operation Whirl Stroke Neutralizes Four Criminals, Rescues Kidnap Victims in Major Crackdown
Operation Whirl Stroke Records Major Successes as Troops Neutralize Criminals, Rescue Kidnap Victims and Bust Drug Network
Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have intensified their campaign against criminal activities across Benue and Taraba States, recording a series of significant operational successes within a one-week period.
The operations, conducted between May 24 and May 31, 2026, resulted in the neutralization of four suspected criminals, the rescue of kidnapped victims, the recovery of weapons and ammunition, and the dismantling of a suspected illicit drug distribution network believed to be contributing to insecurity within the region.
The latest achievements demonstrate the continued efforts of security forces to combat armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal activities affecting communities within the Joint Operations Area.
One of the earliest incidents occurred on May 24 following reports of an armed attack along the Gbajimba–Agasha Road in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Upon receiving distress information, troops immediately deployed to the area to assess the situation and provide assistance. Security personnel discovered two injured residents who had reportedly been affected during the attack.
The victims were promptly evacuated to a healthcare facility in Gbajimba, where they received medical attention. While efforts focused on ensuring the safety and treatment of the injured individuals, security forces simultaneously launched a search operation aimed at locating those responsible for the attack.
Authorities have indicated that investigations and tracking operations remain ongoing.
On the same day, troops received information regarding an armed robbery incident along the Rafin Kada–Donga route in Taraba State.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, security personnel moved into the area and encountered the suspected robbers.
A confrontation followed, during which troops engaged the criminals. The operation resulted in the neutralization of two suspected armed robbers.
Following the encounter, troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, multiple magazines, ammunition, and cash believed to have been linked to the criminal operation.
The recovery of the weapon is expected to contribute to ongoing investigations into armed robbery activities within the region.
The fight against kidnapping also recorded a breakthrough on May 25 after troops responded to a report of abduction along the Antegh–Zongo axis in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State.
Security personnel moved rapidly to the area after receiving information about the incident.
Under pressure from the advancing troops, the suspected kidnappers reportedly abandoned their captives and fled the scene.
The operation led to the successful rescue of two victims, who were later reunited with their families.
Troops also arrested one suspect believed to be connected to the abduction, providing investigators with an opportunity to gather additional intelligence that could aid future operations.
Beyond confronting violent criminals, Operation Whirl Stroke also targeted activities believed to support organized crime within the region.
During an intelligence-driven operation in Makurdi, troops intercepted a vehicle suspected of being connected to illicit drug trafficking.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of hundreds of illicit drug substances and a substantial amount of cash.
Further investigations and follow-up operations enabled troops to identify and apprehend additional suspects believed to be associated with the network.
Additional narcotic substances, a motorcycle, and cash were recovered during the subsequent operation.
Security officials believe that disrupting illicit drug supply networks can significantly reduce criminal activities, as narcotics are often linked to violent crimes, armed robbery, and other security challenges.
The suspects are expected to be transferred to the appropriate anti-drug authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
In one of the most recent operations, troops acted on actionable intelligence concerning the activities of suspected bandits operating within Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
The intelligence led security personnel to a suspected criminal hideout located within the area.
Troops launched a targeted raid on the enclave, resulting in the neutralization of two suspected bandits.
The operation also led to the recovery of ammunition and other items believed to have been used in criminal activities.
Security analysts consider intelligence-led operations such as this crucial to disrupting criminal networks before they can carry out attacks on communities.
Following the series of successful operations, Force Commander Major General Moses Gara commended the troops for their commitment, professionalism, and determination in confronting criminal elements.
He encouraged personnel to maintain the momentum and continue carrying out operations aimed at protecting lives and property across the Joint Operations Area.
The Force Commander also appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and accurate information regarding suspicious activities within their communities.
According to security officials, public cooperation remains one of the most effective tools in combating crime and enhancing community safety.

The recent operations highlight the multi-dimensional approach being adopted by Operation Whirl Stroke in addressing insecurity across Benue and Taraba States.
Rather than focusing solely on armed confrontations, the strategy combines rapid response operations, intelligence gathering, anti-kidnapping efforts, anti-banditry campaigns, and action against criminal support networks.
As security agencies continue their efforts, residents hope that sustained operations and stronger community cooperation will further reduce criminal activities and improve safety throughout the region.
For now, the latest achievements represent another significant step in the ongoing campaign to restore peace, stability, and security across the affected communities.
