BREAKING: Police Debunk Reports of Bandits Arrested at Akure Airport 

The Ondo State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating online that security operatives arrested bandits at Akure Airport. The clarification comes after earlier claims suggested that several suspected bandits had been apprehended close to the airport facility, raising fears about the safety of travelers and aviation infrastructure in the region.

However, the police say those reports misrepresented the actual situation.



According to the police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh, the suspects arrested were not bandits and were not apprehended inside the airport premises. Instead, the police explained that two individuals linked to kidnapping operations were arrested in the Eleyewo area, several kilometres away from the airport. Authorities said the suspects were believed to be logistics suppliers for kidnappers, allegedly responsible for providing food, supplies, and support to criminal gangs operating in nearby forests.



The confusion began after the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) reportedly issued a statement suggesting that four suspected bandits had been arrested near the airport following a security alert. The statement quickly spread across social media platforms and news blogs, prompting concerns among Nigerians about possible bandit activity around the airport. But the police have now clarified that no such bandit arrest occurred at the airport and emphasized that airport security was never compromised. 


The Ondo State Police Command reassured residents and travelers that Akure Airport remains safe and fully secure. Authorities also confirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover the broader kidnapping network connected to the suspects. Security agencies have vowed to continue intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks in the state.



This incident highlights how unverified reports can quickly spread online, creating panic and confusion among the public. Security experts have advised Nigerians to rely on official statements from security agencies before sharing breaking news, especially when it involves sensitive issues like national security.
