Nigerian Navy Arrests Two Suspected Impersonators Posing as Lieutenant and Midshipman in Cross River

Nigerian Navy Arrests Fake Lieutenant, Midshipman in Cross River

Operatives of the Nigeria Navy have arrested two suspected impersonators who allegedly posed as naval officers in Cross River State, raising fresh concerns about the growing trend of criminals disguising as security personnel. The suspects were apprehended in Calabar by naval personnel attached to NNS Victory, a key naval facility responsible for maintaining security operations in the region.

According to reports, the suspects identified as David Norbert Aleji and Francis Gideon Isaac were intercepted after naval officers became suspicious of their conduct and appearance. During questioning, the two men allegedly claimed they were serving officers in the Navy. One reportedly introduced himself as a Lieutenant, while the other claimed to be a Midshipman. However, further checks reportedly revealed inconsistencies in their identities and service claims.

Security operatives later discovered that the suspects were allegedly in possession of military camouflage uniforms, jungle hats, boots, and fake identification cards. Investigators also said the suspects falsely claimed they were attached to NNS Sagbama, a claim that naval authorities quickly discovered to be false. Authorities believe the impersonation may have been part of a scheme to gain trust, intimidate civilians, or carry out illegal activities while posing as military personnel.

Following their arrest, the suspects were handed over to the Nogeria Police Force, specifically the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Calabar. They are currently undergoing further interrogation as investigators attempt to determine; whether they worked with other accomplices, If they used the fake identities to commit crimes, and how long they had been impersonating naval officers.

Security analysts say impersonating members of the armed forces is a dangerous and serious offence because criminals can use such disguises to; carry out kidnappings, intimidate citizens, evade law enforcement or gain unauthorized access to restricted areas. The Nigerian Navy has warned members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals claiming to be military officers without proper identification.

Cases like this highlight an important issue in Nigeria’s security environment. When criminals disguise themselves as soldiers or police officers, it creates confusion and can damage public trust in genuine security agencies. This is why authorities are urging citizens to always verify identities and report suspicious behavior. Security is not just the duty of the military, community vigilance plays a crucial role in preventing crime.
