The Lagos State Task Force has arrested a man allegedly impersonating a Nigerian Navy Captain, alongside two others, during an enforcement operation in Oworonshoki, Lagos.
According to officials, the suspects were apprehended while attempting to interfere with a government-backed operation targeting illegal structures and encroachments in the area. The man, who boldly presented himself as a senior naval officer, reportedly claimed authority over the location and tried to intimidate Task Force personnel.
However, suspicions were raised when he failed to properly identify his naval unit, command structure, or official posting. Further scrutiny of his uniform and insignia also revealed inconsistencies with standard Nigerian Navy attire.
Following immediate verification with naval authorities, it was confirmed that the individual is not a serving officer of the Nigerian Navy, leading to his arrest alongside his accomplices.
Officials stated that the suspects had allegedly been using the false identity to deceive residents, obstruct lawful government actions, and possibly extort money under the guise of military authority.
The Lagos State Task Force described the incident as a serious security concern, stressing that impersonation of military personnel is a criminal offence that undermines public trust and national security.
The suspects have since been handed over to relevant security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report anyone parading as military personnel without proper identification, emphasizing that genuine officers always operate within clearly defined protocols.
