Cancer Explained: Causes, Symptoms, Stages and Treatment

Cancer: Awareness, Causes, Symptoms, Stages, Treatment & What Everyone Must Know

Cancer is one of the most talked-about diseases in the world today, yet many people still don’t fully understand what it is, how it develops, or how it can be prevented and treated. In Nigeria and globally, Cancer continues to affect millions of lives, not just patients, but families, communities, and entire healthcare systems.

This article breaks it all down in a clear, practical way.

Cancer is not a single disease but a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Normally, cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly way. But in cancer, cells grow uncontrollably, they ignore signals to stop dividing, and they can spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body.

Cancer can be caused by a combination of factors; (a) Genetic Factors; some cancers are inherited. Family history increases risk. (b) Lifestyle Choices; smoking (major cause of lung cancer), excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and lack of exercise. (c) Environmental Exposure; radiation, toxic chemicals, air pollution. (d) Infections; Certain viruses and bacteria can lead to cancer, such as, HPV (linked to cervical cancer), Hepatitis B & C (linked to liver cancer).

          Early Warning Signs & Symptoms

Cancer symptoms vary depending on the type, but common signs include; unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, lumps or swelling, unusual bleeding or discharge, chronic pain, changes in skin or moles, or persistent cough or hoarseness.

Important: These symptoms do not always mean cancer, but should never be ignored.

                Stages of Cancer

Cancer is often classified into stages based on how far it has spread: Stage 0; abnormal cells present but not spread. Stage I,  early stage, localized tumor. Stage II & III, cancer has grown and may have spread to nearby tissues or lymph nodes. Stage IV: advanced cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body.

Early detection significantly increases survival chances.

                 Diagnosis & Testing

Doctors use several methods to detect cancer, physical examination, blood tests, imaging (X-ray, CT scan, MRI), biopsy (removal of tissue for testing).

            Treatment Options

Cancer treatment depends on the type and stage: (a) Surgery; removal of tumor, (b) Chemotherapy; uses drugs to kill cancer cells. (c) Radiation Therapy; uses high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells. Targeted Therapy & Immunotherapy; focuses on specific cancer cells, boosts the body’s immune system to fight cancer.

While not all cancers can be prevented, you can reduce your risk by; avoiding smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, getting vaccinated (e.g., HPV, Hepatitis B), limiting exposure to harmful radiation, going for regular medical checkups.

In Nigeria, cancer cases are rising due to, limited awareness, late diagnosis, or inadequate healthcare access. Common cancers in Nigeria include, breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, and liver cancer.

Awareness and early screening can save lives.

Cancer doesn’t just affect the body, it affects; mental health, finances, Families and relationships. However, support systems are crucial; family support, counseling, support groups.

Cancer is a serious disease, but it is not a death sentence. With early detection, proper treatment, and increased awareness. Many lives can be saved. The most powerful weapon against cancer is knowledge.
