Nigeria Expands HIV Prevention with 11,520 Lenacapavir Doses Donated by Global Fund

Nigeria Receives 11,520 Doses of Lenacapavir for HIV Prevention

In a significant development for public health in Nigeria, the country has received 11,520 doses of Lenacapavir, a next-generation long-acting injectable medicine for HIV prevention. The donation, provided by the Global Fund, marks a milestone in expanding Nigeria’s arsenal of HIV prevention tools and increasing access for vulnerable populations. The injectable form of Lenacapavir, administered twice a year, offers a promising alternative to daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), helping individuals adhere more easily to prevention regimens and reducing the risk of new HIV infections.

Lenacapavir is a long-acting HIV preventive medicine that targets the virus before it can establish infection in the body. Unlike daily oral pills, which require consistent daily intake, Lenacapavir can be administered every six months under professional medical supervision. This feature is especially beneficial in Nigeria, where daily adherence can be challenging due to lifestyle, stigma, or logistical issues. By reducing the burden of daily dosing, Lenacapavir improves the likelihood of continuous protection for those at high risk of contracting HIV.

Nigeria remains one of the countries most affected by HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. The introduction of Lenacapavir is a strategic step toward: expanding prevention options for populations at higher risk, supporting the 90-90-90 targets and national HIV goals, and reducing new infections through better adherence and coverage.

Health experts emphasize that innovative tools like Lenacapavir, combined with education, testing, and counseling services, can have a transformative effect on the HIV epidemic in Nigeria.

Officials from the Ministry of Health and Global Fund highlighted that this initiative aligns with Nigeria’s national HIV prevention strategy and global efforts to curb the epidemic. They reiterated the importance of awareness campaigns to encourage uptake and ensure proper administration.

“With these new doses, we can reach more people at risk and provide them with effective, reliable protection against HIV,” a ministry of health spokesperson said.

Healthcare providers, patients, and community members are encouraged to, consult certified health facilities for Lenacapavir administration, continue other preventive measures such as safe sex practices and regular testing, and spread awareness about new HIV prevention options available in the country
