Trump Says He Must Be Involved in Choosing Iran’s Next Leader — But Is That Even Possible?

The U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred international debate after reportedly saying he must be involved in choosing the next leader of Iran following the reported death of the country’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Trump’s statement has quickly drawn global attention because the leadership structure of Iran does not traditionally allow foreign governments to influence the selection of its Supreme Leader.

According to reports circulating in international media, Trump suggested that the United States should play a role in determining who succeeds Khamenei. He also reportedly rejected the possibility of Majtaba Khamenei becoming Iran’s next leader.

Trump argued that the future leadership of Iran could significantly affect global stability and relations with the United States, suggesting that the wrong choice could lead to renewed tensions between the two countries.

In reality, Iran’s Supreme Leader is selected internally by a powerful clerical body known as the Assembly of Experts. This council of senior Islamic scholars is responsible for appointing and overseeing the country’s Supreme Leader. Foreign governments, including the United States, have no official role in this process. Because of this structure, many analysts say Trump’s comments raise serious questions about how such involvement could realistically happen.

From our perspective, Trump’s statement appears more like a political message or strategic pressure rather than a realistic proposal. Iran is a sovereign nation with its own political and religious system. Expecting a foreign power to be involved in selecting its highest authority would be extremely unlikely under current international norms.

However, such statements may also be intended to signal that the United States wants a leadership change that could reshape relations in the Middle East. Still, the idea that a U.S. politician could directly influence Iran’s leadership selection raises an important question about sovereignty and international diplomacy.

Trump’s remarks highlight the broader geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, which have spanned decades and affected global politics, oil markets, and regional stability.

But the key question remains, can any foreign country realistically influence who becomes Iran’s Supreme Leader?

Most political analysts believe the answer is no, unless there were major internal changes within Iran itself.

Let’s Hear From You

What do you think about Trump’s statement?

Do you believe a foreign power like the United States should have any influence over who leads another country? Or is this simply political rhetoric meant to send a message?
