₦98 Billion Disbursed to Over 8,300 Primary Health Centres in 2025 — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that more than ₦98 billion was disbursed in 2025 to support the operations of over 8,300 Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across Nigeria.

The funding was made through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), a key component of Nigeria’s healthcare financing structure aimed at improving access to basic medical services at the grassroots level.

According to the President, the government has focused on reinforcing the Basic Health Care Provision Fund by ensuring consistent quarterly releases to PHCs nationwide.

The disbursed funds were used to:

Support day-to-day operational expenses

Improve service delivery

Maintain essential medical supplies

Enhance patient care at community-level facilities

Primary Health Centres serve as the first point of contact for millions of Nigerians seeking healthcare services, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The BHCPF was created to ensure sustainable financing for primary healthcare and reduce out-of-pocket spending by citizens.

The initiative supports:

Maternal and child health services

Immunization programs

Treatment of common illnesses

Basic diagnostic services

By directing funds to PHCs, the government aims to improve access to affordable healthcare and strengthen preventive care systems.

Nigeria’s healthcare system has long faced challenges such as:

Limited infrastructure

Workforce shortages

Funding gaps

Investments in primary healthcare are considered critical because PHCs form the foundation of the national health system.

With over 8,300 facilities benefiting from the disbursement in 2025, the funding is expected to:

Improve service availability

Reduce pressure on secondary hospitals

Enhance early disease detection

Strengthen community health outcomes

The continued quarterly disbursement under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund reflects a broader policy direction focused on improving healthcare accessibility.

Health experts often emphasize that sustained funding at the primary level is essential for achieving universal health coverage.

Further updates are expected as implementation continues across the country.
