Onitsha Main Market Reopens as Traders Praise Government Security Measures Amid Sit-at-Home Order

Today marks one week since the closure of Onitsha Main Market by the Anambra State Government, following repeated enforcement of a sit-at-home order allegedly linked to IPOB activities. The closure, which began last Monday, was aimed at protecting traders and the public from potential attacks and unrest in the area.

According to reports from observers on the ground, traders and market stakeholders have resumed business activities today, expressing relief and gratitude for the security arrangements provided by the government.

Several traders, speaking to reporters, commended the government for deploying well-equipped security personnel to safeguard lives and property. Many highlighted that the visible presence of security operatives has restored confidence among market participants and reduced the risk of potential insurgent attacks.

If the government continues to provide and equip the market with enough security every Monday, we will continue to operate without fear. “Today, we felt safe and we appreciate the effort” said one trader at the market

Market leaders also emphasized that the collaboration between security agencies and state authorities is critical for maintaining peace and protecting commercial activities in Onitsha.

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has directed market traders to resume opening their shops on Mondays to put an end to the prolonged sit-at-home activities that have been disrupting life and commerce in Anambra State. Recognizing that the persistent closures were jeopardizing the state’s economy, the governor emphasized that normal market operations must be restored to protect livelihoods and ensure economic stability.

To support this directive, the government has deployed police, civil defense, and vigilante personnel, established checkpoint monitoring at key market entrances and exits, and put measures in place to safeguard traders’ movement and protect their goods, ensuring a safe and secure environment for commerce.

Observers noted that this proactive approach helped prevent incidents and allowed market operations to resume smoothly, demonstrating the effectiveness of intelligence-led security planning.

Following today’s reopening, many traders pledged to resume full business activities every Monday, provided that security arrangements remain consistent and adequate. This commitment reflects a growing trust in the government’s protection measures and highlights the importance of security in sustaining economic activities in the region.

As Onitsha Main Market reopens safely today, the response from traders underscores a key lesson for governance and security in Nigeria: effective protection of citizens and property builds confidence, ensures economic continuity, and reduces the influence of unlawful directives such as the IPOB-instigated sit-at-home order.

With continued support from the government, Onitsha’s commercial life may soon return to normal, and traders are ready to operate without fear every Monday.
