Nigeria Customs Intercepts ₦1bn Suspected Cocaine at Badagry–Seme Border

Nigeria Customs Service Intercepts Suspected Cocaine Worth ₦1 Billion Along Badagry–Seme Border

Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have intercepted 22 packages of suspected cocaine valued at approximately ₦1 billion along the strategic Badagry–Seme border corridor.

The seizure was carried out by officers of the Seme Area Command during a targeted anti-smuggling operation along the busy international route linking Nigeria to the Republic of Benin. The border corridor is known as a critical transit point for cross-border trade, both legitimate and illicit.

According to Customs authorities, the suspected narcotics were discovered concealed inside a Toyota Highlander vehicle. Officers reportedly uncovered the packages hidden within a specially modified compartment designed to evade detection.

The interception followed intelligence-driven surveillance operations aimed at curbing smuggling and transnational organized crime along Nigeria’s western border.

One suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure and taken into custody for further investigation.

Following standard procedure, the Nigeria Customs Service confirmed that the suspect and the seized substance have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for forensic examination, investigation, and possible prosecution.

Customs officials reiterated that drug enforcement falls under the statutory responsibility of the NDLEA, while border interception forms part of Customs’ mandate to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity and prevent illegal imports.

The Comptroller of the Seme Area Command emphasized that the seizure reflects intensified collaboration among security agencies to dismantle trafficking networks operating across West African borders.

Authorities noted that the Badagry–Seme axis remains under continuous monitoring due to its vulnerability to smuggling activities, including narcotics, contraband goods, and unauthorized movements.

The latest seizure adds to ongoing federal efforts to combat drug trafficking and organized crime. Security analysts say interceptions at land borders highlight the growing sophistication of smuggling syndicates, who often deploy concealed compartments and altered vehicle structures to bypass checkpoints.

Officials have urged members of the public to provide credible intelligence to support enforcement agencies in combating illicit trade.

Investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected as the NDLEA conducts laboratory analysis to confirm the substance and pursue prosecution.
