Kenneth Okonkwo Alleges Plot Against Peter Obi

Kenneth Okonkwo Alleges Assassination Attempt on Peter Obi in Edo

Fresh political tension has erupted following explosive claims by Kenneth Okonkwo regarding an alleged attack on Peter Obi in Edo State.

According to Okonkwo, the incident was not random violence but an “attempted assassination” allegedly linked to government forces or their agents. His statement has since ignited national debate and intensified concerns over political safety in Nigeria.

Speaking on the incident, Okonkwo claimed he had been in communication with John Odigie Oyegun, who reportedly provided details about the alleged assassination attempt.

Okonkwo further referenced a prior warning allegedly issued by the current Governor of Edo State, cautioning Peter Obi against entering the state without official clearance and suggesting his security could not be guaranteed.

According to Okonkwo, that earlier statement had already been discussed publicly as a potential threat to opposition figures. He now argues that the recent events appear to validate those earlier concerns.

The incident reportedly occurred as supporters gathered to welcome Olumide Akpata, former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA).

Okonkwo stated that the welcoming group encountered a convoy of about ten vehicles, allegedly led by a pilot vehicle. Details surrounding what followed remain contested, with different narratives circulating about whether the situation involved an organized attack or a clash between opposing groups.

As of the time of writing, there has been no official confirmation from federal or Edo State authorities categorizing the incident as an assassination attempt.

If substantiated, such an allegation would represent a grave escalation in Nigeria’s political climate. Accusations of state-sponsored intimidation or targeted violence against opposition figures strike at the core of democratic principles.

Political observers note that Nigeria’s democracy depends heavily on freedom of movement for political actors, protection of opposition leaders, neutral security enforcement and peaceful political engagement

Any perception of targeted violence can deepen political divisions and erode public trust in institutions.

Peter Obi, a prominent opposition figure and former presidential candidate, has maintained significant grassroots support nationwide. His visits to various states often attract large crowds, sometimes generating tension among rival political camps.

On the other hand, Edo State has recently been a politically sensitive environment, especially amid shifting alliances and heightened electoral activities.

Given the seriousness of the claim, many Nigerians are calling for an independent investigation into the incident, official clarification from Edo State authorities, security reports detailing what transpired and assurance of protection for all political actors

Allegations of attempted assassination are not minor accusations; they demand factual scrutiny and institutional response.

Kenneth Okonkwo’s statement has amplified concerns about political safety and democratic tolerance in Nigeria. However, allegations must be investigated thoroughly and addressed transparently.

In a democratic society, opposition leaders must be able to move freely without fear, and governments must uphold the rule of law impartially.

As Nigerians await verified accounts of what truly happened in Edo, one thing remains clear: political competition should never descend into violence.
