Gunmen Burn Church and Police Station in Agwara, Niger State
Gunmen Set Church and Police Station Ablaze in Agwara, Niger State
Residents of Agwara Local Government Area in Niger State were thrown into fear in the early hours of Sunday, 1 February 2026, following a violent attack by suspected armed bandits that left key public and religious facilities destroyed.
According to official security confirmations, the attackers struck before dawn, when most residents were still asleep. Their first target was the Agwara Divisional Police Station, where gunmen reportedly arrived heavily armed and launched an assault on officers on duty.
During the attack, parts of the police station were set on fire, damaging structures and equipment. The intensity of the assault forced security personnel to retreat, allowing the attackers to operate freely for a period of time.
After attacking the police facility, the assailants moved into the community where they set fire to a church building, identified as the United Missionary Church of Africa (UMCA) in Agwara. The fire caused significant damage to the church property, leaving members of the congregation devastated.
Beyond the destruction of property, the attackers reportedly abducted several residents during the raid. While exact details remain limited, security sources confirmed that people were taken from the community as the gunmen withdrew.
Search and rescue efforts were said to have been initiated shortly after the incident, with security agencies working to trace the movement of the attackers and secure the release of those abducted.
The attack has left the Agwara community shaken. Residents described a night of panic, with many fleeing their homes or hiding as gunshots and flames lit up the area. The burning of both a police station and a place of worship has heightened fears about safety and the capacity of local security structures to respond to such threats.
Community leaders and residents have since called for stronger security presence, improved intelligence gathering, and better protection for rural and semi-urban communities that continue to face repeated attacks.
This incident adds to the broader challenge of banditry and violent attacks across parts of northern Nigeria. When armed groups can successfully attack a police station and destroy public infrastructure, it raises serious concerns about deterrence, preparedness, and long-term solutions to insecurity.

The destruction of a church also touches on the deeper social impact of such attacks, beyond physical damage, they disrupt community life, faith practices, and a sense of normalcy.
The Agwara attack is a stark reminder that insecurity remains a pressing issue requiring urgent attention. While investigations and security operations continue, residents are left to rebuild and hope for better protection going forward.
Until communities can sleep without fear and public institutions are adequately defended, incidents like this will continue to challenge peace and stability.
