Court Sentences Akwa Okuku to 11 Months Imprisonment, Orders Rehabilitation and Public Denouncement of Charm Practices

In a landmark ruling, a Nigerian court has sentenced Akwa Okuku Tiwaraki na Oba to 11 months imprisonment for offenses related to traditional charm practices. The ruling not only includes a prison term but also a series of post-imprisonment directives aimed at rehabilitating him and addressing the societal concerns linked to his actions.

The court has directed that Akwa Okuku Tiwaraki na Oba serve his sentence at the Awka Correctional Center. The imprisonment period will last 11 months, after which he is expected to comply with specific instructions issued by the court to reform his activities.

In addition to the custodial sentence, the court issued several directives aimed at ensuring that Akwa Okuku publicly renounces practices associated with Okeite and related charms. The orders include:

Ambassador for Youth Re-orientation: Upon completion of his imprisonment, he will be appointed as an ambassador tasked with promoting youth education and re-orientation against the use of charms and harmful traditional practices.

Destruction of Shrine: His Oba Shrine will be destroyed to prevent further usage of the location for charm-related activities.

Prohibition from Practicing Okeite: He will be legally barred from performing or administering Okeite rituals or any related charms.

Public Denouncement: Tiwaraki na Oba must make a public statement denouncing Okeite and associated charm practices, signaling his commitment to abandoning the activities for which he was convicted.

The court’s judgment reflects a growing emphasis on combining punitive measures with societal rehabilitation. By mandating both imprisonment and public advocacy against charm practices, the court aims to:

Deter similar offenses in the community, educate the youth on the dangers of harmful traditional practices, reinforce societal norms against the use of charms for manipulation or harm

Legal analysts say this ruling could serve as a precedent for handling cases involving traditional ritual offenses, blending justice with public education and awareness campaigns.
