Tragedy in Awhum Market as Tree Collapses During Heavy Rainstorm


A devastating incident reportedly occurred at Awhum Market following a heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, as a large tree suddenly fell on traders and residents, leading to multiple deaths and injuries.


Eyewitnesses said the storm intensified late in the evening, with powerful gusts of wind sweeping across the market area. In the middle of the downpour, a massive tree, said to have stood within the market for years, reportedly gave way and crashed onto nearby stalls where people had taken shelter from the rain.



Traders and bystanders described scenes of confusion and panic as people screamed for help. Some rushed to lift branches in an attempt to rescue victims trapped beneath the fallen tree, while others called for emergency assistance.

Victims were reportedly moved to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment, though the exact number of casualties has yet to be officially confirmed by the Enugu State Police Command or other relevant authorities.


As of the time of filing this report, state officials had not released a detailed statement confirming the number of fatalities or providing a full breakdown of the incident.
