Benue Court Jails Builderstech MD for 48 Years in ₦500 Million Investment Scam

Benue Court Hands 48-Year Jail Term to Builderstech MD for Defrauding Thousands

In a major legal ruling, a Federal High Court in Makurdi, Benue State, has sentenced Agene Johnson Godwin, Managing Director of Builderstech Solution Ltd, to 48 years in prison for defrauding thousands of Nigerians through fraudulent investment schemes.

According to investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Godwin used his company to collect investments from over 5,000 Nigerians, promising unusually high returns. The scheme collected more than ₦500 million from unsuspecting individuals who believed they were investing in legitimate projects.

The EFCC described the operation as a carefully orchestrated scam, where victims were misled by the promise of safe and profitable returns, a classic tactic in financial fraud.

The case was prosecuted in the Federal High Court by the EFCC, which brought an eight-count charge against Godwin for obtaining money by false pretenses and related offenses.

Justice M.S. Abubakar, presiding over the case, highlighted the massive scale of the fraud and the significant harm caused to ordinary Nigerians. The court handed down a 48-year jail sentence without an option of fine, emphasizing that financial crimes of this magnitude would not be tolerated.

This verdict is a significant message for both investors and fraudsters:

Serious consequences for large-scale financial crimes: The judgment sets a precedent for strict punishment in cases of investment fraud.

The EFCC’s role in protecting Nigerians: The agency continues to crack down on fraudulent schemes to safeguard public funds.

Awareness for the public: Nigerians are reminded to exercise caution and verify any investment opportunities that promise high returns with little risk.

While legal action brings accountability, victims of such schemes often cannot recover all lost funds. To protect your money:

Always verify the legitimacy of investment platforms.

Avoid schemes that guarantee unusually high returns.

Report suspicious activities to regulatory authorities like the EFCC.

The 48-year sentence handed down to the Builderstech MD sends a strong message: investment fraud will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will face strict penalties. For Nigerians seeking to grow their wealth, the ruling serves as a reminder to invest responsibly and stay vigilant.
