17 Arraigned in Lagos Court for Public Urination and Defecation
Seventeen individuals have been arraigned before a mobile court in Lagos State for allegedly engaging in public urination and open defecation, offences that violate environmental and sanitation laws in the state.
The arraignment took place at the Special Offences Mobile Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, as part of ongoing enforcement operations aimed at improving public hygiene and environmental standards across Lagos.
The action was carried out by officials of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (popularly known as KAI) in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority.
Authorities say the arrests were made during routine monitoring and sanitation enforcement operations targeting individuals found violating public health regulations.
Stating that Lagos State has repeatedly warned residents against acts of public urination and defecation, describing them as environmental hazards that contribute to disease outbreaks, blocked drainage systems, and poor sanitation.
Under Lagos environmental laws, public indecency and sanitation violations can attract fines, community service, or short-term custodial sentences depending on the ruling of the court.
The mobile court system allows for swift prosecution of environmental and minor criminal offences, especially those affecting public order and sanitation.

Lagos, being one of Africa’s most densely populated cities, faces continuous sanitation challenges. Public urination and open defecation have long been identified as contributors to spread of infectious diseases, environmental pollution, offensive odours in public spaces, and drainage blockage and flooding
The state government has intensified public awareness campaigns encouraging residents to use designated public toilets and maintain proper hygiene.
The authorities maintain that strict enforcement is necessary to sustain cleanliness and improve the overall image of Lagos.
Environmental officials have also urged business owners and transport operators to provide accessible toilet facilities to reduce incidents in markets, bus parks, and commercial hubs.
