14 Feared Dead as Boat Conveying Wedding Guests Capsizes in Kebbi

Tragedy struck a riverine community in Kebbi State after a boat carrying wedding guests capsized, leaving at least 14 persons dead.

The incident occurred along the Yauri River in Gumbi village, Yauri Local Government Area, as passengers were returning from a wedding ceremony. Local sources said the victims were part of a convoy that had escorted a bride to her husband’s home in a neighboring community before embarking on the ill-fated journey back.

Authorities confirmed that 14 people, mostly women and a child, lost their lives in the accident. Several other passengers were rescued following a swift response by local divers and community members who mobilized immediately after the boat overturned.

Eyewitnesses said the boat was reportedly conveying a large number of passengers at the time of the incident, raising concerns about possible overcrowding.

Governor Nasir Idris has expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Yauri. He described the incident as heartbreaking and urged residents to adhere strictly to water transportation safety measures. The governor also attended funeral prayers held for the deceased, who were buried in accordance with Islamic rites shortly after the incident.

Boat mishaps remain a recurring challenge in riverine communities across northern Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season when water levels rise and currents become stronger. In many rural areas, boats serve as a primary mode of transportation for social gatherings, trade, and daily commuting.

Local authorities have reiterated the need for life jackets, regulated passenger limits, and improved monitoring of water transport operators to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Officials say investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the capsizing. Preliminary findings suggest possible overloading, but authorities have not issued a final report.

As the community mourns, the tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter enforcement of marine safety regulations in Nigeria’s inland waterways.
