Passenger Plane Overshoots Runway Into Sea During Emergency Landing in Somalia; All 55 Onboard Survive

A passenger aircraft carrying 55 people ended up in shallow sea water near Mogadishu after overshooting the runway during an emergency landing, but authorities confirmed that everyone on board survived the incident.

The aircraft, operated by a local airline, had departed Aden Abdulle International Airport in Mogadishu for a domestic destination when the crew detected a technical problem shortly after takeoff. According to aviation officials, the pilots made the decision to turn the aircraft around and return to Mogadishu as a safety precaution.

Upon landing, the plane was unable to stop within the available runway distance. It continued past the runway threshold and moved toward the coastline, eventually coming to rest in shallow water along the shore of the Indian Ocean. Images from the scene showed the aircraft positioned partly on wet sand and shallow surf, surrounded by emergency responders.

All 50 passengers and five crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft. Rescue teams responded quickly, assisting travelers off the plane and conducting routine medical checks. Authorities reported no fatalities and no serious injuries.

Government officials and civil aviation authorities visited the site shortly after the incident. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the reported technical fault and to assess whether weather, runway conditions, or mechanical factors contributed to the overrun.

Aviation experts note that runway overruns, while uncommon, can occur if an aircraft lands at a higher speed than expected, encounters braking issues, or experiences other operational complications. Modern emergency procedures and pilot training are designed to reduce the risk of casualties in such scenarios.

The aircraft remains at the scene pending further inspection by investigators. Officials have assured the public that a full technical review will be conducted and that findings will be made available once the inquiry is completed.

For now, the safe evacuation of all 55 people onboard stands as the most significant outcome of what could have been a far more tragic event.
