Two Killed, Wedding Guests Abducted as Bandits Launch Attack in Katsina

What was meant to be a moment of joy and celebration turned into tragedy after suspected bandits attacked a wedding convoy in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing two people and abducting several guests.

The incident occurred on Sunday night as wedding attendees were travelling through a rural community believed to be Unguwar Nagunda, when armed men suddenly opened fire, causing panic and chaos among the guests.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers emerged from surrounding bushes and began shooting indiscriminately, forcing the convoy to stop abruptly. In the confusion that followed, some guests attempted to flee, while others were overpowered by the gunmen.

At least two people were confirmed dead at the scene, while several others sustained injuries. Reports indicate that the bride was among those injured, deepening the tragedy of the event.

The assailants reportedly whisked away an undisclosed number of wedding guests, heading into the nearby forest before security help could arrive.

Residents of the area described the attack as devastating, noting that weddings in the community have traditionally been peaceful gatherings. Many families are still anxiously waiting for information about their abducted relatives, while mourning those who lost their lives.

Local sources say fear has gripped nearby villages, with many residents avoiding night travel and social gatherings.

As of the time of this report, security agencies have not released an official statement detailing the number of abducted victims or rescue efforts. However, community leaders are calling on authorities to intensify patrols and launch immediate operations to secure the release of those taken.

The attack adds to the long list of bandit-related incidents in Katsina State and the wider North-West region, where rural communities continue to face threats from armed groups despite ongoing security interventions.

For many Nigerians, the incident raises troubling questions about safety on rural roads and the increasing boldness of criminal groups targeting even joyful social occasions.
