The Zamfara State Hisbah Commission has confirmed the arrest of a woman over allegations of engaging in witchcraft-related activities in Gusau, the state capital, a development that has generated widespread debate across Nigeria.

According to the commission, the suspect, identified as Khadija Abdullah, was arrested following complaints from residents and community leaders who alleged that unusual spiritual activities were being conducted at her residence in the Gadar Baga area of Gusau. The arrest has reignited discussions about the intersection of religion, traditional beliefs, law enforcement, and human rights in contemporary Nigerian society.

According to a statement issued by the Zamfara State Hisbah Commission, security operatives carried out a raid on the suspect’s residence after receiving several complaints from members of the community. Residents reportedly claimed that the house had become a regular destination for people seeking spiritual healing, traditional remedies, and solutions to various personal challenges. The commission stated that the operation was launched to determine whether any unlawful activities were taking place at the location.

Officials of the Hisbah Commission said that during preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted to using certain perfumes and claimed she was possessed by spirits. According to the commission, she also stated that she prayed over water and gave it to people who visited her seeking relief from spiritual or personal problems. Another woman, identified as Asiya Lawal, was reportedly found at the residence during the operation. According to the commission, she informed investigators that she had visited the house to seek treatment for what she described as a spiritual ailment.

Authorities have not disclosed whether any physical evidence was recovered during the operation.

The Chairman of the Zamfara State Hisbah Commission, Sheikh Umar Hassan Gusau, has directed investigators to conduct a thorough inquiry into the allegations. Officials say the objective is to determine the authenticity of the claims and establish whether any laws were violated.

As of the time of reporting, no formal criminal charges had been announced against the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.

The case has generated mixed reactions among legal experts, religious leaders, and members of the public. Some residents believe authorities have a responsibility to investigate activities that generate public concern, particularly where allegations of fraud or exploitation may exist. Others argue that allegations involving spiritual beliefs require careful handling to ensure that constitutional rights, including freedom of religion and due process, are respected.

Legal analysts also point out that under Nigerian law, an arrest does not amount to a conviction. The suspect remains presumed innocent unless a competent court finds otherwise.

The incident has sparked lively discussions across social media platforms, with Nigerians expressing differing opinions. Some people have applauded the Hisbah Commission for responding to complaints from residents. Others have questioned whether accusations of witchcraft alone should form the basis for criminal investigations without clear evidence of a recognizable offence under the law.

The debate reflects broader conversations about the role of traditional beliefs, religion, and law enforcement within Nigeria’s diverse society.

The arrest of Khadija Abdullah by the Zamfara State Hisbah Commission has once again brought issues surrounding spiritual practices and public accountability into the national spotlight. While authorities continue their investigation, the outcome of the case will depend on the evidence gathered and any legal proceedings that may follow.

Until then, the allegations remain under investigation, and the suspect is entitled to the presumption of innocence guaranteed under the law.
