Makinde Seeks UN Probe Into Oyo School Abduction After Rescue of Pupils and Teachers
Makinde Seeks UN Probe Into Oyo School Abduction, Calls for Independent International Investigation
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called for an independent international investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of the state, describing the circumstances surrounding the incident as too serious to be examined solely through domestic processes. The governor made the appeal during a statewide broadcast after receiving the rescued pupils and teachers in Ibadan following their release after 56 days in captivity. His request for the involvement of the United Nations (UN) and international human rights organisations has added a new dimension to one of Nigeria’s most widely discussed kidnapping incidents of 2026.
Addressing residents of Oyo State, Governor Makinde said the events surrounding the May 15 abduction were “grave and unusual” and deserved objective examination beyond Nigeria’s existing institutions. According to the governor, the investigation should establish the full facts surrounding the attack, identify any institutional failures, and determine whether negligence, compromise, or other factors contributed to the incident. He stressed that transparency remains essential to restoring public confidence in the country’s security institutions.
Makinde specifically urged international accountability mechanisms, including those within the United Nations system, to carefully examine the circumstances surrounding both the abduction and the eventual rescue of the victims. The governor explained that his appeal was not intended to undermine Nigerian security agencies or judicial institutions but rather to ensure that every aspect of the incident is independently reviewed in the interest of justice. He argued that Nigerians deserve a complete understanding of how such a large-scale school abduction occurred and how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
The kidnapping occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked schools in Oriire Local Government Area and abducted dozens of pupils and teachers. The incident sent shockwaves across Oyo State and Nigeria, triggering widespread concern about the safety of schools, particularly in rural communities. Families of the victims endured weeks of uncertainty while security agencies intensified efforts to locate and rescue those held captive.
After spending nearly two months in captivity, the abducted pupils and teachers were rescued during a coordinated security operation involving the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force. Authorities stated that several suspected kidnappers were arrested while others were neutralised during the operation.
Government officials also maintained that the rescue was achieved without releasing detained criminal suspects as part of any agreement. The successful operation brought relief to families who had waited anxiously for the safe return of their loved ones.
Governor Makinde believes that beyond celebrating the successful rescue, Nigeria must carefully examine the circumstances that allowed the incident to occur. According to him, an independent investigation could help answer important questions regarding: How the attackers planned and executed the operation. Whether intelligence failures contributed to the incident. The effectiveness of emergency response systems. And measures needed to strengthen school security nationwide.
He argued that identifying lessons from the incident would help protect other schools from similar attacks in the future.
Makinde’s appeal has generated mixed reactions across political and public circles. Supporters say independent scrutiny could strengthen accountability, improve public confidence, and encourage reforms in national security. Others believe Nigerian institutions are capable of handling the investigation internally without international involvement.
Regardless of differing opinions, many Nigerians agree that protecting schools and preventing future abductions should remain a national priority.
The incident has once again highlighted the continuing security challenges facing educational institutions in some parts of the country. Security experts continue to advocate: Improved intelligence gathering. Increased security presence around schools. Better coordination among security agencies. Stronger community policing. And enhanced emergency response systems.
Education stakeholders also stress the importance of ensuring that children can learn without fear of violence or kidnapping.

Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for a United Nations-backed investigation represents one of the strongest official responses yet to the Oriire school abduction. While the rescue of the pupils and teachers has been widely celebrated, the governor insists that understanding how the incident happened is equally important.
Whether the international community responds to the request or not, the incident has renewed national conversations about accountability, school security, and the protection of children across Nigeria.
