INEC Extends Deadline for Submission of 2027 Election Candidates to July 14

INEC Extends Deadline for Submission of Candidates’ Lists to July 14 Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit the names and particulars of their candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections. The electoral body announced that the deadline, which was initially scheduled to expire on Saturday, July 11, 2026, has now been moved to 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

The decision provides political parties with additional time to complete the nomination process and upload the required information through INEC’s designated nomination portal.

According to the commission, the extension followed requests from political parties that needed more time to finalize their candidate selection processes and complete the necessary documentation. Reports indicate that the appeal was made through the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which asked INEC to consider the operational challenges some parties encountered during the nomination process.

After reviewing the request, the commission approved a short extension while maintaining its commitment to the overall 2027 election timetable.

The revised deadline gives political parties a final opportunity to: Submit the names of their presidential candidates. Upload details of National Assembly candidates. Correct any errors in previously submitted information. And complete outstanding documentation required by INEC.

The commission emphasized that all submissions must be completed before the new deadline, as no further extension should be expected.

The submission of candidates’ particulars is one of the most important stages in Nigeria’s electoral process. Once political parties complete the nomination process, INEC begins verification and administrative procedures necessary for publishing the final list of candidates eligible to participate in the elections. Failure to submit candidate information within the approved timeline could affect a political party’s participation in the affected elections.

INEC has repeatedly stated that it remains committed to conducting transparent, credible, and inclusive elections in accordance with the Electoral Act and the Nigerian Constitution. The commission urged political parties to take advantage of the additional time responsibly and avoid waiting until the final hours before uploading their candidates’ details. Officials also encouraged parties to ensure that all submitted information is accurate and complies with legal requirements.

The extension comes as political parties continue consultations, internal meetings, and final preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections. Many parties are working to conclude primary election processes, resolve internal disputes, and finalize candidate selections before the revised deadline expires.

Political observers believe the extension may help reduce administrative errors and improve compliance with electoral guidelines.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. Some believe the extension demonstrates INEC’s willingness to accommodate legitimate operational concerns while ensuring broader participation by political parties. Others argue that political parties should have been fully prepared before the original deadline and caution against repeated requests for additional time during future electoral processes.

INEC’s decision to extend the deadline for the submission of presidential and National Assembly candidates to July 14, 2026, provides political parties with a final opportunity to complete one of the most critical stages of the 2027 election process. As the countdown to the general elections continues, attention will now shift to the publication of candidate lists and the next phases of Nigeria’s electoral timetable.

Political parties are expected to use the remaining time to ensure all submissions are complete, accurate, and fully compliant with INEC’s guidelines.
