Anambra Varsity Suspends Anglican Priest Over Alleged Sexual Misconduct, Launches Investigation

Paul University, Awka, in Anambra State, has indefinitely suspended an Anglican priest and university staff member following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a student. The institution announced that the suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of an internal disciplinary process and an ongoing police investigation.

The development has attracted widespread public attention and renewed discussions about the need for accountability, student safety, and due process within higher institutions. It is important to note that the allegations have not been proven in court, and the suspended priest remains entitled to the presumption of innocence while investigations continue.

The suspended staff member was identified as Ven. Cornelius C. Eze, an Anglican priest who serves as a Practical Biology Technologist in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences at Paul University.

According to a statement issued by the university, the decision to suspend him was taken after allegations of sexual misconduct involving a student came to the institution’s attention. The university said the suspension was necessary to allow a thorough and impartial investigation without interference.

Paul University disclosed that it became aware of the allegation on July 14, 2026The institution stated that it immediately notified relevant security agencies after learning of the incident, explaining that the action was intended to prevent any breakdown of law and order on campus and to ensure that the matter was handled appropriately.

The university further confirmed that law enforcement authorities have commenced investigations alongside its internal disciplinary procedures.

In its official statement, the university reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment for students and staff. The management emphasized that it has zero tolerance for sexual harassment, abuse, or any form of misconduct, regardless of the position or status of those involved.

University authorities assured students, parents, and the general public that the investigation would be conducted fairly, transparently, and in accordance with established procedures.

While the allegations have generated public interest, legal experts stress that the case should be allowed to follow due process. Under Nigerian law, every individual accused of a criminal or disciplinary offence is presumed innocent unless proven guilty through the appropriate legal process. The outcome of the university’s disciplinary proceedings and the police investigation will determine any further action.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns about sexual misconduct within educational institutions and the importance of effective reporting mechanisms. Advocates for students’ rights have continued to encourage universities to strengthen policies that protect students from harassment while ensuring that complaints are investigated promptly and fairly. Many stakeholders also believe that institutions should continue investing in awareness campaigns, confidential reporting channels, and support services for students.

News of the suspension has sparked discussions across social media, with many Nigerians commending the university for taking immediate administrative action pending investigations. Others have urged the public to avoid rushing to conclusions, emphasizing that the facts should be established through a transparent investigation before any final judgment is made.

The case has also renewed conversations about accountability within religious and educational institutions.

The suspended priest is expected to remain off duty while both the university’s disciplinary panel and the police complete their investigations. Depending on the outcome, the university may decide on further administrative measures, while any criminal liability, if established, would be determined by the courts.

The institution has pledged to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities throughout the investigation.
