Xenophobia: Edo Governor Okpebholo Pledges N41 Million for Returnees from South Africa

Xenophobia: Edo Governor Okpebholo Pledges N41 Million Support for Returnees from South Africa

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has announced a N41 million financial support package for 41 Edo indigenes who recently returned to Nigeria following xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Under the initiative, each returnee will receive N1 million to assist with reintegration, business recovery, and rebuilding their lives after being forced to leave South Africa.

The announcement has been widely welcomed as a humanitarian intervention aimed at helping affected citizens regain stability after their traumatic experiences abroad.

Governor Okpebholo made the pledge while receiving the returnees after their arrival in Nigeria. He expressed sympathy for the victims, describing the xenophobic attacks as unfortunate and assuring them that the Edo State Government would not abandon its citizens during difficult times. According to the governor, the financial assistance is intended to provide immediate relief while enabling beneficiaries to begin new livelihoods or revive businesses they may have lost due to the attacks.

South Africa has experienced recurring outbreaks of xenophobic violence over the years, with foreign nationals frequently becoming targets of attacks, intimidation, looting, and displacement. Nigerians have often been among those affected during periods of anti-immigrant violence. The latest unrest reportedly forced many Nigerians to seek assistance from diplomatic authorities before arrangements were made for their voluntary return home.

The affected Nigerians were evacuated back to the country with the assistance of the Federal Government and relevant agencies. Among them were 41 Edo indigenes, many of whom reportedly left behind businesses, jobs, personal belongings, and years of investment in South Africa.

Several returnees expressed gratitude for the assistance while hoping for opportunities to rebuild their lives in Nigeria.

Governor Okpebholo explained that the N1 million grant for each returnee is designed to ease the transition back into society. The support is expected to help beneficiaries: Start small businesses. Resume vocational activities. Meet immediate family needs. Or re-establish economic stability.

The governor also encouraged the returnees not to lose hope despite their experiences abroad.

The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of Nigerians living in foreign countries. Many stakeholders have called for stronger diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and South Africa to address recurring xenophobic attacks and ensure the protection of foreign nationals.

Analysts also stress the importance of creating better economic opportunities within Nigeria to reduce the pressures that encourage irregular migration.

The governor’s decision has generated positive reactions from many Nigerians. Supporters described the intervention as a compassionate gesture that demonstrates concern for citizens affected by international crises. Others, however, urged governments at all levels to complement emergency financial assistance with long-term employment and empowerment programmes for returnees.

Governor Monday Okpebholo’s N41 million support package represents an important step toward helping Edo citizens recover from the hardship caused by xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

While financial assistance cannot erase the trauma experienced by the victims, it offers an opportunity for many to begin rebuilding their lives with renewed hope.

The development also serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting Nigerians abroad while strengthening local economic opportunities that enable citizens to thrive at home.
