Anambra Arraigns Blogger Over Alleged False Reports About Governor Soludo and Son

The Anambra State Government has initiated legal proceedings against a blogger, Ejike Ofoegbu, over the publication of alleged false reports concerning Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his son, Ozonna SoludoThe blogger, who is the publisher of Igbo Times Magazine, was arraigned before a court on charges that include criminal defamation and alleged violations of Nigeria’s Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

The case has attracted national attention, sparking renewed discussions about responsible journalism, freedom of expression, and accountability in the digital media space.

According to reports, the Anambra State Government accused Ofoegbu of publishing false and defamatory stories about Governor Soludo and members of his family. Among the reports in question were claims involving Governor Soludo’s relationship with his son, Ozonna Soludo. Authorities alleged that the publications contained fabricated information capable of damaging the reputation of the governor and his family. Prosecutors argued that the stories were circulated online without factual verification and were intended to mislead the public.

The blogger was formally arraigned before the court on multiple charges, including criminal defamation and cybercrime-related offences. During the proceedings, the prosecution outlined allegations that the online publications violated Nigerian laws governing the use of digital platforms for the dissemination of false information. The matter has been adjourned for further hearings as the judicial process continues.

Following the controversy, Ejike Ofoegbu reportedly issued a public apology in which he retracted the publications. In his statement, he acknowledged that the reports concerning Governor Soludo and his son were false and expressed regret over publishing them. He also apologised to the governor, his family, and readers, admitting that the reports did not meet acceptable standards of accuracy and fairness.

The apology has since circulated widely across social media and news platforms.

The case has reignited debate about the responsibilities of bloggers, online publishers, and digital content creators.

While Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, media practitioners are also expected to ensure that information published is accurate, fair, and properly verified. Legal experts note that knowingly publishing false information capable of damaging another person’s reputation may expose individuals to civil or criminal liability, depending on the circumstances.

The case also highlights the increasing importance of fact-checking in an era where information spreads rapidly across digital platforms.

The widespread use of social media has made it easier for both accurate and false information to circulate quickly. Government agencies, media organisations, and civil society groups have repeatedly urged content creators to verify information before publication to reduce the spread of misinformation. Experts argue that responsible journalism requires careful verification, especially when reporting on public officials and matters that may influence public opinion.

With the case now before the court, legal proceedings will determine whether the prosecution can establish the allegations against the defendant. Like every criminal defendant in Nigeria, the blogger is entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence unless proven guilty by a competent court.

The outcome of the trial may also contribute to future discussions about digital publishing standards and the enforcement of cybercrime and defamation laws.

The arraignment of Ejike Ofoegbu marks another significant case involving alleged online misinformation and defamation in Nigeria. While the blogger has publicly apologised and retracted the disputed reports, the matter now rests with the courts, which will determine any legal consequences.

The case serves as a reminder that although digital platforms have expanded access to information, accuracy, fairness, and responsible reporting remain essential principles of journalism and public communication.
