Security Forces Uncover Alleged IPOB/ESN Arms Cache Hidden Inside Piggery in Enugu

Security operatives have recorded a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat armed criminal groups and restore stability across Nigeria’s South-East region following the discovery of a significant weapons cache allegedly linked to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The operation, carried out by troops of the 82 Division Garrison under Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), led to the recovery of a large quantity of weapons, ammunition, and tactical equipment hidden inside a structure reportedly disguised as a piggery in Enugu State.

The discovery is being viewed as one of the most significant security operations in the region in recent months.

According to military sources, the operation was launched following actionable intelligence obtained from individuals previously arrested during security operations targeting suspected members and collaborators of IPOB and ESN.

Security agencies reportedly analyzed information gathered during interrogations and surveillance activities before identifying a suspected hideout in Gariki, located within Enugu South Local Government Area.

Acting on the intelligence, troops and DSS operatives moved swiftly to the location and conducted a carefully coordinated operation.

What appeared to be an ordinary agricultural facility soon revealed a different reality.

Investigators reportedly discovered that the structure had been designed to conceal weapons while appearing to function as a piggery. A detailed search of the facility uncovered a substantial stockpile of military-grade weapons and ammunition allegedly stored for future operational use.

The discovery has raised concerns about the sophistication of methods being employed by armed groups seeking to evade detection by security agencies.

Officials believe the location may have served as a logistical hub for the storage and movement of weapons within the region.

During the operation, security forces recovered a significant quantity of arms and ammunition. Among the items reportedly seized were: a) General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG) b) RPG-7 launcher tube c) AK-47 rifles d) Hand grenades e) Tear gas launcher and cartridges f) Multiple AK-47 magazines g) 270 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition h) 478 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.

Security analysts describe such recoveries as strategically important because they reduce the operational capabilities of armed groups and potentially prevent future attacks.

The quantity and variety of the recovered items suggest that the facility may have played a key role in sustaining armed operations within parts of the South-East.

Authorities confirmed that suspects linked to the operation have been transferred to the DSS Enugu State Command for further investigation. Investigators are expected to examine the origin of the weapons, identify individuals connected to the cache, and determine whether the facility was part of a wider network operating across multiple states.

Security agencies are also likely to investigate possible funding channels, supply routes, and support structures that may have contributed to the establishment and maintenance of the alleged arms depot.

The operation forms part of the broader Operation EASTERN SANITY II, an ongoing security campaign aimed at dismantling criminal networks, reducing violent attacks, and restoring confidence among residents of the South-East.

For several years, security agencies have conducted targeted operations against armed groups accused of attacks on security personnel, government institutions, and civilian communities.

Officials say intelligence-led missions remain one of the most effective strategies for disrupting planned attacks and preventing the movement of weapons across the region.

Security experts have repeatedly emphasized the importance of cooperation between military forces, intelligence agencies, police units, and local communities.

The successful recovery of the arms cache demonstrates how coordinated intelligence gathering and joint operations can produce tangible security outcomes.

Authorities noted that information provided through investigations and intelligence channels played a critical role in identifying the location.

The operation also highlights the growing emphasis on preventive security measures rather than reacting only after attacks occur.

Following the operation, security agencies appealed to members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information.

Officials stressed that community cooperation remains essential in identifying suspicious activities, hidden weapons locations, and criminal networks operating within local communities.

Residents have been encouraged to remain vigilant and report unusual movements or activities to the appropriate authorities.

With military-grade weapons, ammunition, and tactical equipment reportedly recovered from a concealed location, the operation underscores the challenges facing security agencies as well as the importance of intelligence-driven interventions.

As investigations continue, authorities hope the operation will contribute to broader efforts aimed at dismantling criminal networks, preventing violence, and strengthening peace and security throughout the region.

The success of the mission serves as a reminder that sustained collaboration between security agencies and the public remains vital in addressing threats to public safety and national stability.
