INEC Issues Certificates of Return to Winners of June 20 Bye-Elections Across Multiple States
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially issued Certificates of Return to candidates declared winners of the bye-elections conducted on June 20, 2026, across several states in Nigeria, formally confirming their electoral victories.
The presentation of certificates marks the final administrative step in the election process, officially recognizing the successful candidates as duly elected representatives of their constituencies.
According to the electoral body, the bye-elections were conducted in parts of Rivers, Enugu, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Kano States. The elections were held to fill vacant legislative seats and were closely monitored by political stakeholders, security agencies, and election observers across the affected regions. Additional certificate presentations were also noted for elections conducted in Kebbi State for the Zuru State Constituency and in Ekiti State for the governorship election process.
The Certificates of Return were issued on behalf of the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, by the Supervising National Commissioner for Rivers State, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu. During the presentation ceremony, electoral officials formally handed over certificates to the winners, confirming them as the legitimate representatives of their respective constituencies.
Other National Commissioners representing different electoral zones also participated in the ceremony, presenting certificates to candidates across the various constituencies.
In her remarks, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu congratulated the elected candidates and urged them to remain committed to the people who elected them. She emphasized that public office is a responsibility that requires dedication, accountability, and service to constituents.
According to her, the most important duty of elected officials is to ensure that the needs and interests of their communities are properly represented at the legislative level.
The issuance of Certificates of Return is a constitutional requirement that formally validates election results in Nigeria. Once issued, the certificates serve as official proof that candidates have been duly elected, allowing them to assume legislative or executive office depending on the position contested. The process also marks the transition from electoral competition to governance responsibilities.
Bye-elections are often viewed as indicators of political strength among parties in different regions.
Analysts say the outcomes of such elections can provide insights into voter sentiment and emerging political trends ahead of future general elections.
The recent bye-elections attracted attention due to their spread across multiple states, reflecting the diverse political landscape of the country.
INEC officials used the opportunity to remind elected representatives of the importance of good governance and constituency engagement. They stressed that elected officials must prioritize development projects, transparency, and responsiveness to the needs of their constituents.
Observers note that such reminders are part of broader efforts to strengthen democratic accountability in Nigeria.
