Federal Government Pressures Cement Manufacturers to Reduce Prices in Nigeria

Federal Government Moves to Pressure Cement Manufacturers Over Rising Prices

The Federal Government of Nigeria has stepped up efforts to address the rising cost of cement across the country, calling on major cement manufacturers to reduce prices in order to ease pressure on infrastructure development and construction activities.

The development comes amid growing concerns over inflation in building materials, which has significantly affected government projects, private developers, and ordinary citizens seeking affordable housing.

According to official discussions within the Ministry of Works, the continuous increase in cement prices has placed a heavy burden on ongoing infrastructure projects nationwide.

Government officials argue that the rising cost of cement has led to frequent requests from contractors for project cost variations, delaying project completion timelines and increasing overall expenditure.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, reportedly emphasized the need for urgent engagement with cement producers to stabilize the market and reduce pressure on public infrastructure funding.

The Federal Government has announced plans to hold formal discussions with major cement manufacturers starting from July 1, 2026.

These meetings are expected to focus on: a) production costs and pricing structures. b) Distribution challenges. c) Market stability. e) Possible government interventions to ensure affordability.

Officials have expressed optimism that constructive dialogue could lead to a reduction in cement prices in the coming months.

Cement remains one of the most important materials in construction, directly affecting road projects, housing development, and public infrastructure. With prices rising, many construction projects have faced increased costs, forcing adjustments in budgets and slowing down progress in some regions. Housing developers have also raised concerns that high cement prices contribute significantly to the rising cost of rent and property development across urban centers.

Contractors working on government and private projects have reportedly been affected by fluctuating material prices, especially cement. Many have requested contract adjustments to reflect current market realities, a development that has further increased the financial pressure on infrastructure budgets. Industry observers say this trend highlights the need for stronger price regulation and improved supply chain efficiency in the construction sector.

While no official price cut has yet been announced, discussions between the government and manufacturers may lead to a downward review of cement prices if agreements are reached. Manufacturers are expected to present their production and operational costs during negotiations to justify current pricing levels.

Experts note that cement pricing is closely tied to Nigeria’s broader economic conditions, including energy costs, transportation, foreign exchange rates, and import dependency for certain production inputs. Any reduction in cement prices could have a ripple effect across the economy, potentially lowering construction costs and improving access to affordable housing.

As discussions begin in July 2026, stakeholders across the housing and infrastructure industries will be watching closely to see whether the negotiations result in meaningful price reductions.

For now, Nigerians continue to hope that the outcome will ease the burden on both public projects and private construction efforts.
