The Delta State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its crackdown on infrastructure vandalism after arresting two suspected electric cable thieves and recovering stolen wires during an operation in Kwale, Ndokwa West Local Government Area.

The operation was carried out through a collaboration between officers of the Kwale Police Division and members of a local vigilante group following intelligence reports about ongoing vandalism activities along a major road in the area.

According to police authorities, security operatives received information that unidentified individuals were allegedly cutting and removing electric cables along the Ibabu–Ugiliamai Road.

Acting on the tip-off, officers moved to the location and reportedly caught the suspects in the process of dismantling the cables. The suspects attempted to escape when they noticed the approaching security team, but they were apprehended after a chase. One of the suspects reportedly sustained injuries during the operation and was later taken for medical treatment.

Police recovered vandalized electric cables believed to have been removed from public infrastructure. The recovered cables have been taken into police custody as exhibits while investigations continue to determine the extent of the vandalism and whether other members of the network are involved. Authorities identified the suspects as Osakwe Sunday, 28, and Ekene Obocha, 34.

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the destruction of public infrastructure and warned that the command would intensify efforts to track down individuals involved in similar crimes. He emphasized that vandalism of power facilities affects entire communities by disrupting electricity supply, damaging public assets, and creating additional financial burdens for government and utility providers.

The police boss also assured residents that anyone found tampering with public infrastructure would be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.

The arrest highlights the growing challenge of infrastructure vandalism in many parts of Nigeria. Electric cables, transformers, rail facilities, and other public assets are often targeted by criminal groups seeking to sell metal components for financial gain. Security experts say such activities not only disrupt essential services but can also endanger lives through exposure to live electrical installations and damaged utility networks.

Police authorities praised members of the local vigilante group and residents who provided information that led to the operation. The command encouraged communities to continue reporting suspicious activities, stressing that timely intelligence remains one of the most effective tools for preventing vandalism and other crimes.

The suspects remain in police custody while investigators work to determine whether they are connected to previous incidents of cable theft within the area. Authorities are also examining possible links to buyers or scrap dealers who may be involved in the illegal trade of stolen electrical materials.
