Sowore Criticizes Bala Mohammed, Peter Obi, Says AAC Is Nigeria’s Only Genuine Opposition
‘Thieves Can’t Oppose Thieves’ — Sowore Slams Bala Mohammed, Peter Obi, Insists AAC Is Nigeria’s Only Real Opposition
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has once again stirred political debate after criticizing prominent opposition figures in Nigeria, declaring that many of them cannot truly oppose the current government because they are part of the same political system. Sowore made the controversial statement while reacting to ongoing discussions about opposition coalitions ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. According to him, politicians who have previously been part of the ruling political establishment cannot suddenly present themselves as genuine alternatives. His words were blunt and direct. “Thieves can’t oppose thieves”.
The remark quickly went viral on social media and triggered heated debates among supporters of various political parties.
In his criticism, Sowore referenced Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State, and former presidential candidate Peter Obi. Sowore argued that many politicians positioning themselves as opposition figures today have previously held powerful government positions, making it difficult for them to convincingly challenge the political structure they once benefited from. He maintained that Nigeria’s political system is dominated by career politicians who move from one party to another without genuine ideological differences.
Sowore insisted that the African Action Congress (AAC), the political party he leads, remains the only genuine opposition movement in the country. According to him, AAC represents a grassroots-driven political alternative, rather than a coalition of established politicians seeking to regain power. He argued that many so-called opposition alliances are simply rearrangements of the same political actors, rather than a true transformation of Nigeria’s political landscape.
Sowore’s comments come at a time when discussions about a possible grand opposition coalition for the 2027 elections are gaining momentum. Political analysts believe opposition parties may need to unite if they want to mount a serious challenge to the ruling party. However, Sowore has repeatedly rejected the idea of joining such alliances. He insists that any coalition involving politicians he considers part of Nigeria’s long-standing political establishment cannot deliver real change.
As expected, Sowore’s remarks have generated strong reactions from Nigerians online. Some people believe he is simply speaking uncomfortable truths about the country’s political elite. Others argue that attacking fellow opposition figures may weaken efforts to challenge the ruling party in future elections. Supporters of Peter Obi and other opposition leaders also pushed back, insisting that political change often requires collaboration among different actors.

Sowore’s statement raises an important question about Nigeria’s political future: Can real change come from existing political leaders, or does the country need completely new political actors? As the 2027 elections gradually approach, debates like this are likely to become even more intense.

Do you agree with Omoyele Sowore that Nigeria’s current opposition leaders are part of the same system?
