Troops Nab Suspected Militia Member, Recover Rifle in Benue Community
Troops operating under Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested a suspected high-profile criminal during a targeted security operation in Agasha Village. The suspect, identified as Suurnen David Akim, a 27-year-old resident of the community, was apprehended following an intelligence-driven operation carried out by soldiers deployed under the Chief of Army Staff Intervention Battalion XI. The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by Nigerian security forces to clamp down on criminal elements terrorizing communities in Benue State.
According to a statement issued by Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, the operation was launched on March 13, 2026, after security agencies received credible reports of an attack on a resident identified as Shaapera Seeta Micheal in Agasha Village. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, troops immediately mobilized to the area to track down the suspect believed to be responsible for the assault.
Upon arrival in the community, the soldiers reportedly cordoned off the area to prevent the suspect from escaping. A systematic search operation was then conducted across strategic locations in the village. During the operation, the troops successfully located and arrested Suurnen David Akum, who is believed to be linked to militia activities within the area. Security operatives also recovered a locally fabricated rifle from the suspect during the arrest.
Following the arrest, the suspect is currently undergoing interrogation as security agencies attempt to uncover possible connections to other criminal activities or networks operating in the region. Authorities say he will later be handed over to the appropriate agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Force Commander of the Joint Task Force, Moses Gara, praised the soldiers for their professionalism, courage, and tactical precision during the operation. He encouraged the troops to sustain the momentum in the ongoing fight against criminal elements threatening peace in the region. According to him, security forces remain committed to ensuring that criminals do not find safe haven within communities under their watch.

Communities across parts of Benue State have experienced security challenges in recent years, including militia attacks, banditry, and violent clashes. Operations such as those carried out by Operation Whirl Stroke are part of broader efforts by the Nigerian military to restore peace and protect residents in affected areas.
Security analysts believe that intelligence-driven operations like this are crucial in dismantling criminal networks before they escalate into larger threats.
For residents of Agasha and surrounding communities, the arrest represents a sign that security forces are actively responding to threats. However, many citizens continue to call for sustained operations and stronger community-security collaboration to ensure long-term safety.
As investigations continue, authorities hope the arrest will help expose wider criminal networks operating within the region.
