Lagos Youths Protest Weeks of Power Outage as Electricity Crisis Worsens in Nigeria

Darkness Across Nigeria: Lagos Youths Take to the Streets Over Weeks of Power Outage

Frustration finally boiled over in Lagos as angry youths stormed the streets to protest the worsening electricity crisis that has plunged homes, businesses, and entire communities into darkness. For weeks, many parts of  Nigerian have suffered from poor or completely absent power supply, forcing citizens to rely on expensive fuel-powered generators to survive. With the price of petrol already soaring, the situation has become unbearable for millions.

What started as murmurs of frustration quickly turned into a visible outcry, young Nigerians demanding answers from the government.

Electricity is not a luxury; it is a basic necessity in any modern society. Yet, in a country blessed with vast natural resources, reliable power remains an elusive dream. Residents across Lagos reported; days without electricity, sudden blackouts lasting for hours or even days, businesses shutting down due to high generator costs, and families struggling to keep food from spoiling.

For small business owners, the crisis is devastating. Barbers, welders, cold-room operators, and shop owners depend on electricity to survive. Without it, income disappears overnight.

As electricity disappears, Nigerians are forced to turn to generators. But there is another problem. Fuel prices have climbed sharply since the subsidy removal policy introduced by Bola Ahmed Tinubu shortly after he assumed office. Petrol prices that once hovered around ₦180 per litre have risen to over ₦1,000 per litre in many areas. This means Nigerians are now trapped between two harsh realities: No electricity and extremely expensive fuel to power generators.

For many households, running a generator daily is now simply impossible.

During the 2023 election campaign, Bola Ahmed Tinubu promised to transform Nigeria’s power sector and deliver stable electricity to Nigerians. Many voters believed that promise. But nearly two years later, the situation appears to be worsening rather than improving. The protests in Lagos reflect a growing frustration among young people who feel that the government has not delivered on its commitments.

Electricity remains unreliable. Fuel prices remain high. And the cost of living continues to rise.

When electricity fails, the consequences ripple across the entire economy. Without power; businesses reduce operations, jobs are lost, food prices increase due to storage challenges and, production costs skyrocket.

Investors also become hesitant to invest in a country where businesses must generate their own electricity. In short, power failure slows national development.

Sowore Declares Plan to Unseat Tinubu in 2027, Promises to Fix Nigeria’s Electricity and Security Challenges

                    EverydayStoryNetwork Perspective

The anger on the streets of Lagos is not surprising. Nigerians are among the most resilient people in the world, but resilience should not be mistaken for endless patience. When citizens pay taxes, vote in elections, and follow the law, they expect something in return, good governance and basic infrastructure. Electricity is one of those basics.

Without it, economic progress becomes almost impossible.

               The Questions Nigerians Are Asking

As the protests grow, several questions are echoing across the country: Why is electricity still unstable after decades of promises? What concrete plan does the government have to fix the power sector? Why must citizens pay so much for fuel when electricity is unavailable?

Until these questions receive real answers, frustration may continue to grow.
