EFCC Chairman Advises Enugu Students to Avoid Internet Fraud, Focus on Digital Skills for a Successful Future

EFCC Chairman Urges Enugu Students to Reject Internet Fraud and Embrace Digital Skills

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a powerful warning to Nigerian youths: internet fraud is not the path to success, and ethical digital skills are the key to building a sustainable future. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, while addressing students in Enugu State, emphasized that many young Nigerians are falling into the trap of cybercrime due to the allure of quick money. He noted that these shortcuts often lead to long-term consequences, including arrest, imprisonment, and a ruined reputation.

During the address, the EFCC boss highlighted several critical points; Cybercrime is risky and destructive, while internet fraud may appear profitable in the short term, it can destroy lives, careers, and family stability. Digital skills are the future, skills such as coding, web development, graphic design, social media management, and digital marketing offer legitimate avenues to wealth and independence. Invest in yourself, not scams – Ethical choices today lead to long-term growth, while fraudulent activities may temporarily satisfy desires but bring inevitable consequences. Entrepreneurship and tech opportunities abound – Nigeria’s growing tech ecosystem provides numerous opportunities for innovative youths to create solutions, start businesses, and earn sustainably.

“Your future is brighter when you build skills not scams. Digital knowledge beats shortcuts,”Olukoyede told the students

Internet fraud has become a major concern in Nigeria, affecting not only the individuals involved but also the country’s global reputation. By promoting digital skills, the EFCC hopes to, reduce youth involvement in cybercrime, encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, and prepare a generation for the global digital economy

EFCC Chairman Olukoyede’s advice reflects a broader challenge facing Nigerian youths: Many young people lack access to resources, mentorship, and guidance, which makes the temptation of quick money appealing. Cybercrime offers short-term gain, but the risks far outweigh the benefits. On the other hand, learning digital skills opens doors to sustainable careers and global opportunities.

This isn’t just a lecture,  it’s a roadmap for youth empowerment in a rapidly digitalizing world.
