Security forces have intensified operations in southeastern Nigeria after troops of the Nigerian Army destroyed an alleged ritual shrine linked to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) during a raid in Abia state. The operation, carried out by soldiers under the 82 Division Nigeria Army, led to the arrest of three suspects believed to be connected to kidnapping and other criminal activities in the region.

The raid took place in a forest area near Olokoro Forest, following intelligence reports that the location was being used as a hideout by criminals.

According to military sources, troops stormed the forest hideout after receiving information about suspicious movements in the area. During the operation, soldiers reportedly discovered a shrine believed to be used for ritual activities and spiritual fortification by suspected members of IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The shrine was destroyed on the spot as part of efforts to dismantle criminal infrastructure in the area.

During the raid, three young men were arrested. Military officials say the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation. Authorities believe they may have links to kidnapping networks operating in parts of Abia and neighboring states. Security agencies say further investigations will determine the full extent of their involvement in criminal activities.

Troops also recovered several items during the operation, including; mobile phones, identity cards and ATM card, machetes and other weapons, empty ammunition cases, a motorcycle, and a bag containing suspected illicit substances. These items are expected to assist investigators in tracking other members of the criminal network.

In recent months, the Nigerian military has stepped up operations across the Southeast, targeting armed groups accused of attacks on security personnel, kidnappings, and destruction of public facilities. Officials say the destruction of hideouts and shrines used by criminal groups is part of a broader strategy to restore security and stability in the region. However, security experts also note that the region’s security challenges require both law enforcement action and deeper political dialogue to address the root causes of unrest.

The discovery of alleged ritual sites tied to criminal activities highlights how complex the security situation has become in parts of the country. While security operations are necessary to dismantle violent networks, lasting peace will require community cooperation, trust in institutions, and meaningful engagement with local concerns. Security must go hand-in-hand with justice, development, and dialogue if Nigeria hopes to achieve long-term stability.

Security operations continue across the Southeast, but many questions remain:

Will military operations alone solve the region’s security crisis?

What role should communities play in supporting security agencies?

How can Nigeria address the root causes of violence and unrest?
